ROM SANTA CLAUS TO TEXAS ICON: THE STORY OF BIG TEX Long before he began saying “Howdy, folks!” at the State Fair of Texas, Big Tex celebrated Christmas in the small town of Kerens, Texas. In 1949, Kerens constructed a towering Santa Claus to encourage Christmas shopping. A few years later, State Fair president R. L. Thornton purchased the figure for $750. Artist Jack Bridges transformed the giant Santa into a cowboy, complete with boots, jeans, Western shirt, and enormous cowboy hat. Big Tex made his State Fair debut in 1952, standing 52 feet tall over Fair Park in Dallas. His booming voice and friendly Texas greeting soon made him one of the most recognizable symbols of the State Fair. Tragedy struck on October 19, 2012, when an electrical fire destroyed the original Big Tex. But you can’t keep a good cowboy down! A new 55-foot Big Tex debuted the following year and continues welcoming visitors today. From a Christmas promotion in a small Texas town to a beloved Lone Star State tradition, Big Tex has been standing tall for generations. “Howdy, folks! Welcome to the State Fair of Texas!”
