This was a massive, 82-day joint military endeavor designed to destroy the Central Office for South Vietnam (COSVN)—the elusive headquarters of the Viet Cong communist guerrilla forces—located deep within War Zone C, near the Cambodian border. The Historic Jump The crown jewel of this operation took place on day one, near the small village of Katum. Over 800 paratroopers from the 173rd Airborne Brigade (Separate) loaded into a fleet of Lockheed C-130 Hercules transport planes. At precisely 0900 hours, they conducted the only major mass tactical combat parachute jump of the entire Vietnam War. It was the first American combat jump since the Korean War, and remains one of the largest airborne assaults in modern history.
