Kate held a hand out to Calista saying, “My beautiful babydoll, may I have this dance? “Yes, cupcake you may.” Calista smiled at her in the same adoring way Susie had smiled at Angus. As they danced to the music, Kate quietly asked, “What was that all about between Susie and Angus, sugah?” “I think she wanted some alone time with him, Kate.” Calista hesitated for a moment before adding. “I think she’s going to tell him that she loves him.” Kate couldn’t say she was surprised exactly, but it still wasn’t what she had expected Calista to say. “Calista, sugah,” she replied. “What do you know and what have you been up to with her?” “Well, I know she loves him because she told me so,” Calista told her with a smile. “And as for what I’ve been up to, cupcake... I just told her what you told me on our first night together. Wartime Rules, we don’t know how long we will be here and there’s no point in waiting to share how you feel. Kate gracefully dipped Calista before bringing her back up right to kiss her gently. “I hope he knows how much courage it’s taking her to make such a declaration, sugah.” Calista smiled again before saying, “I think he does, Kate.” Then something else occurred to her. “Wait, are you telling me that you were afraid to tell me that first night on my front steps how you felt?” Kate laughed lightly, “Of course I was, sugah. There’s always a risk when you share such vulnerable feelings. I could have misread your interest, you could have been offering platonic friendship which I took to be something more.” Calista showed mild surprise, “Why Kate, I didn’t realize you had doubts about my affections for you in the beginning. You hid them well.” Kate smiled at her sweetly. Then Calista added, “It took real courage to kiss you that first night we spent here together too.” Kate offered her a knowing look, “I know it did, babydoll. It’s how I knew all of it was truly real for us.
