Orbital astronaut view of Earth at night, glowing golden city lights

About this image

This stunning photograph taken from the International Space Station captures the curved horizon of planet Earth after dark, dotted with brilliant warm golden clusters of city lights that mark dense populated urban regions. A thin band of green atmospheric airglow traces the edge of Earth's atmosphere, set against a deep inky black expanse of star-filled outer space, with wispy scattered clouds visible across the dark planetary surface. The high contrast between the bright human-made light footprint, deep navy tones of the planet, and dark cosmic backdrop creates an awe-inspiring perspective of global civilization from orbit.
