Caught completely off-guard without their armor fully fastened, the frantic defenders broke ranks. In the resulting close-quarters melee, Imagawa Yoshimoto was cornered and decapitated. This stunning victory completely destroyed the powerful Imagawa clan, instantly elevated Nobunaga to national prominence, and set him on his legendary path to unify feudal Japan.
