QT: Illustrated Poem title: The Cabal at Nickey Nackeys. by Aphra Behn, 1684 orig QT by @DavidP https://budgetpixel.com/p/38687 Aphra Behn was a playwright in the 1600s. Aphra Behn’s plays were considered scandalous because they were written with a level of sexual frankness that was deemed unacceptable for a woman writer. A widow, she earned her living by writing and faced severe backlash for her provocative themes, mocking of Puritan values, and portrayal of women’s sexual desires In 1665, King Charles recruited her to be a spy during the Second Anglo-Dutch War. She was sent to Antwerp under the code name Astrea, to turn a treasonous English exile, William Scott, into a double agent for the Crown. She failed and Scott betrayed her. King Charles refused to pay her passage back to England and she had to borrow money to return. When King Charles continued to refuse to pay her for her work in Holland she couldn't repay the debt, she was sent to debtor's prison. After that she didn't want to owe anyone anything and wrote a play a year until the merging of 2 theaters cut her playwriter pay. Then she started writing poems and narratives as well to supplement her pay.
