The Last Charge - 8/60 - **Ntshingwayo kaMahole Khoza leads the Zulu charge, defeating Lord Chelmsford in the Battle of Isandlwana, 1879** --- On 22 January 1879, the British Empire invaded the Zulu Kingdom, confident that modern firearms would ensure a swift victory. Instead, at the Battle of Isandlwana, they met the tactical brilliance of Zulu General Ntshingwayo kaMahole Khoza. Exploiting Lord Chelmsford's overconfidence, Khoza perfectly executed the impondo zankomo (horns of the buffalo) formation, outmaneuvering and encircling the divided British forces beneath the craggy Isandlwana hill. Armed primarily with assegais and cowhide shields, 20,000 warriors overran the camp. It stands as one of the British Army's greatest military defeats and a legendary triumph of indigenous strategy and sovereignty. --- The battle is celebrated Juluka's 'Impi', originally banned by the SABC for celebrating defeat of a white colonial army by black warriors. Today it greets the Springboks before a home rugby test match.
