**Afternoon on the River** The river slid beneath them, green and shining, its surface broken only by Ellen's trailing fingers; the punt creaking as the current pulled it onward. They moored where the bank rose gently, grass warm and crushed beneath their feet. Ruth lay back, breath becoming unsteady, and Ellen's touch followed—patient, unhurried, as though the two of them were learning the shape of a new language by heart. They kissed as one might pause to taste fruit. Fabric slipped, lay discarded beside them. Later, Ellen rested sleepily within the circle of Ruth's arms. She was dimly aware of birdsong nearby, of the lazy lapping of water. And she knew with certainty that the world—her world—had altered. Not loudly, but forever.
