Lyrics: Dance Hall Ditty

I was raised on a dusty farm Way out west, And we were always poor, Though Papa did his best. And as I grew I knew I had to make more of my life, 'Cause I wasn't gonna settle For being a poor man's wife. So when I turned eighteen I left that ol' farm for good, And Papa, he was gracious, He said he understood. So I took a train to the city With just one dollar in my shoe, And a burnin' ambition To make my dreams come true. [Chorus] I'm gonna find my own way, Gonna live my own life, I ain't gonna settle For being a poor man's wife. There's more than one way to love, More than one road to take, And if you think I'm aimin' way too high, Then you're making a big mistake! I got a job in a dance hall Run by a gal named Tullulah May, She was loud, brash, and sassy, Yeah, I liked her right away. I was moppin' and I was sweepin' Once the nightly crowds had gone, But being n that dance hall, I felt like I belonged. Then one night I was singin' As I pushed that broom along, And Tullulah must've heard me, She said, "Gimme a proper song." Well, I guess I was flustered, I coughed and cleared my throat, Then I trilled a dance-hall favourite, 'Cause I knew it note for note. [Chorus] I'm gonna find my own way, Gonna live my own life, I ain't gonna settle For being a poor man's wife. There's more than one way to love, More than one road to take, And if you think I'm aimin' way too high, Then you're making a big mistake! When I was done, Tullulah clapped, And I blushed at that applause. She said, "Girl, you got somethin' special With that sweet, sweet voice of yours. So I'm gonna make you an offer Of steppin' out on the stage, To sing your pretty heart out, And I'll pay the going wage." So the next night I'm out there, Dolled up with powder and lace, Tremblin' like a leaf inside, Gaslights lighting up the place. Then I take a big breath and start singin', And the hall quiets to a hush, Till the crowd shows its approval In a loud and roaring rush. Well, my ears, they were buzzin', I felt like I was floating in a dream, And Tulullah was there in the wings, Lookin' like a cat that got the cream. Then she took my hand and said "Y'know you're such a gifted kid. I'm so thrilled I could kiss you!!" And kiss me is what she did! For a moment I felt surprised, Then I kinda knew what to do. Though in the privacy of the dressing-room I still learned a thing or two. So I reckon I could say All of my dreams had come true, Especially when I lost my heart, To you-know-who! [Chorus] I'm gonna find my own way, Gonna live my own life, I ain't gonna settle For being a poor man's wife. There's more than one way to love, More than one road to take, And if you thought I was aimin' way too high, Then you made a big mistake!
