Lira of the East - The serpent who challenges the willpower of men
By breljoset
The second part on my series about the viperous naga: Lira of the East. In the shadowed heart of the ancient kingdom of Al-Khuzam, where the air hung heavy with incense and forgotten spells, there lived a creature known only in whispers as the Emerald Naga. Her name was Lira and she was no ordinary serpent of the sands. Born of primordial curses woven between desert djinn and the old gods of the deep earth, Lira wore the form of devastating beauty above the waist and the glittering, scaled coils of a colossal cobra below. Her hood shimmered with living gold, and her eyes—slitted and luminous—held the ancient hunger of those who remember when men were merely playthings for the divine. One sultry night, a hapless merchant named Karim stumbled into her hidden alcove. He had come seeking a rare artifact to save his failing caravan: a single golden apple said to grant unmatched fortune. Instead, he found Lira reclining upon silken cushions, her emerald coils draped luxuriously across the tiled floor. Lanterns flickered like captive stars, casting warm light across her jeweled bodice and the generous curves that had lured countless men to ruin. "Ah, weary traveler," she purred, her voice like honeyed venom. "You look as though the world has tasted you and found you wanting." Karim's breath caught. Never had he seen such perfection. Her dark hair cascaded like midnight rivers beneath a silken hood adorned with watchful golden eyes. Bracelets chimed softly as she extended one graceful hand, holding a perfect, crimson apple that seemed to pulse with inner light. "This is no ordinary fruit," Lira whispered, leaning closer. The scent of spice and warm scales filled his senses. "One bite, and all your desires shall bloom. Wealth beyond counting. Women who will worship the ground you walk upon. Power to bend kings to your will." Her smile was sweet, almost tender—the smile of a lover. Yet beneath the table, her powerful tail shifted silently, ready to strike. Karim hesitated only a moment. Who could refuse such a gift from a goddess? His trembling fingers brushed hers as he accepted the apple. It was warm, almost alive. He brought it to his lips. As the first sweet juice touched his tongue, the illusion cracked. Visions flooded him: his caravan overflowing with gold, beautiful wives, eternal youth. But then came the truth. His legs grew heavy, then numb. Scales began to ripple beneath his skin. Lira laughed softly, a sound like rustling silk and rattling bones. "Poor, greedy man," she cooed, rising higher on her coils until she towered over him. "Did you truly believe the Serpent offers gifts without price? I am deviousness incarnate, the eternal tempter who walks between worlds. Every man who sits at my table believes himself clever enough to escape. Every man becomes another coil in my collection." ...And a preview still of the next part of the series which will be animated:
