//How to turn your favourite character into a custom MTG Commander deck: v2.0

<PART 2> <How to build a custom Spell & Land suite> Turning your original character into a MTG Commander deck is easier than it looks. You don’t need encyclopaedic rules knowledge or a binder full of rares — just a character, a dream, and a willingness to translate their identity into card mechanics. What we did with Glint, Reforged Stars Druid is a clean example of how to build spells, relics, and lands that feel like a pocket universe orbiting your OC. Below is the full walkthrough, step by step, with universal templates you can fill in for your own character. Step 1: Start With the World Around Your Character Before touching mana symbols or mechanics, ask: What does the world look like when this character is present? For Glint, the world was: star‑roots, lunar shrines, astral caverns, and relics humming with old light. Those images shaped every spell and land we made — from Moonbeam to Astral Pulse , from Astral Grove to Starborn Nexus . Write three words that describe your OC’s world. Those three words become your design compass. Step 2: Choose their Colours & what the "Color Pie" Is. Magic’s colour pie is the game’s personality chart. Each colour has its own worldview, playstyles, signatare traits and strategic limits. Here’s the quick version: White — order, protection, clarity, lifegain, small spirit tokens Blue — knowledge, logic, illusions, card draw, counterspells Black — ambition, sacrifice, recursion, graveyard magic Red — emotion, chaos, fire, speed, impulsive spells Green — growth, nature, resilience, creature‑based draw We chose Green, White, and Black for Glint because they match his identity: White is the constellations. Black is the void between them. Green is all life born from this duality and state of flux [also nebulas, or "star gardens" as I like to say]. This palette shaped everything — from Guiding Bolt (white), to Shadow of the Constellations (black), to Astral Bloom and Star-root Rebirth (green). Commander Template (Use Here) [Card Name], [Your OC’s Title] Legendary Creature — [Race/Class] Mana Cost: {X}{Y}{Z} Power/Toughness: A/B Signature Ability — Whenever [your theme trigger happens], choose one — • [Effect option 1] • [Effect option 2] • [Effect option 3] When [Card Name] enters the battlefield, search your library or graveyard for [Your OC’s Key Item] , reveal it, and put it onto the battlefield. “[Your OC’s flavour quote].” Step 3: Build the Spell/Relic Framework Your spell suite should reflect how your character uses magic. Think in three tiers: Early Game Small buffs, minor removal, tiny tokens. (For Glint: Starry Wisp , Moonshield, Starlit Blessing .) Mid Game Recursion, lifegain, scrying, thematic utility. (For Glint: Astral Pulse , Starfall Invocation , Umbral Nova .) Late Game Big splashy finishers — the “sky cracks open” moments. (For Glint: Astral Alignment , Starpath Ritual , Cosmic Ascension , Celestial Bastion , Eclipse of the Fallen Sun , Star-root Rebirth , Astral Convergence , Starforged Ascendant .) But the real glue is your OC’s relics — their personal items or signature abilities turned into playable artifacts. Glint’s relics were: Psi Gem Star Map Glint’s Core These weren’t just flavour pieces — they were designed to trigger Constellation , the mechanic that fires whenever an artifact or enchantment enters the battlefield. Your OC’s relics should do the same. Artifact Template (Use Here) [Relic Name] Legendary Artifact Mana Cost: {X} Constellation — Whenever an enchantment or artifact enters under your control, [small effect]. {T}: Add one mana of any color. Spend this mana only to cast [creature type] spells or activate abilities of [your OC’s relics]. “[Relic flavour line].” Spell Template (Use Here) [Spell Name] Instant / Sorcery — [Color] Mana Cost: {X}{Y} Choose one — • [Effect option 1] • [Effect option 2] • [Effect option 3] If [your OC is present], choose two instead. “[Spell flavour line].” Step 4: Respect Scry and Draw Like a Responsible Adult Magic has rules about who gets to draw cards and who gets to peek at the future: White gets tiny scry and conditional draw Black draws by paying life or sacrificing creatures Green draws through creatures and growth We follow these rules when designing spells like Radiant Convergence , Umbral Observatory , and Celestial Growth . Enchantment Template (Use Here) [Enchantment Name] Enchantment — [Subtype] Mana Cost: {X}{Y} When [Enchantment Name] enters the battlefield, [small effect]. At the beginning of your upkeep, choose one — • [Effect option 1] • [Effect option 2] • [Effect option 3] If [your OC is present], choose two instead. “[Enchantment flavour line].” Step 5: Grow the Land Cycle From the Same Mythic Soil Your lands should feel like places your character would actually visit. Glint’s world gave us: Constellation Lands (Basics) Astral Grove Verdant Starfield Lunar Sanctuary Sanctum of Returning Light Starfall Cavern Umbral Observatory Rare Dual Lands Radiant Canopy Sanctuary of Verdant Light Umbral Starfen Gloomlit Orchard Astral Reliquary Moonshadow Basilica Tri‑Lands Starborn Nexus Celestial Thicket Glint’s Astral Gate All of them tap for the right colours and give small constellation bonuses. Land Template (Use Here) [Land Name] Land — [Subtype] {T}: Add {G}/{W}/{B}. *Commander Signature effect* — Whenever an [X] or [Y] enters under your control, [small effect]. If you control [your OC or relic], [optional bonus]. “[Land flavour line].” Step 6: Make Everything Orbit the Commander Every spell, relic, and land should feel like it belongs to your OC’s story. If a card doesn’t feel like them, cut it. If a card feels too much like them, make it legendary. That’s how you build a deck that feels like a lived-in world affected by your character. GLHF & may your topdecks be ever in your favor!
