D&D RAIs, Day 2 rolls: 24, 17, 8. A D&D random encounter vignette <Dhampir Alchemist vs Lich> The air at the vault’s entrance tasted of corroded copper and mouldy vellum, layered with a horribly sickening miasma — the lair’s built‑in permanent defence, a passive death sentence for anything that dared breath in the lethal fumes. Just outside the half‑open iron doors, I took a moment to check the sealed vials on my bandoleer after clearing the threshold for traps. Seven vials of regular—only one left of the ‘good stuff’. Shit, I never get used to this part. Tearing off the wax seal of the serum with my fangs, I threw my head back and chugged it like a shot of cheap whiskey. Gods, I wish it were. The concoction hit my system like a damn nightmare. Normally, a mortal body can’t process the pure plasma of a hemophage without succumbing to cascading organ failure, so I’d bound the dormant cells to a homebrewed reversible ionic liquid solvent. My pale skin bruised instantly as thick, pitch‑black veins spiderwebbed across my jaw, throat, and hands. My blood thickened to sludge as the serum slowly reacted to my steadily dropping body heat — a virulent fuse waiting for its catalyst, primed for a monstrous alchemical trade—or my permanent death. I tilted the wide brim of my hunter’s hat low, letting the shadow swallow my face. Bloodshot eyes locked behind the silvered sights of the heavy repeating crossbow, held by two leadening arms. Seconds dragged on, feeling like minutes as my head pounded with regret. Forcing myself forward, I stepped straight into the suffocating purple‑green smog of the lich's lair, bracing for the scene beyond it with a determined grimace. The repository was a cathedral to forgotten sins — towering stone shelves sagged under the weight of grimoires sought after centuries and gained by countless atrocities enacted by or for the resident undead tyrant, no doubt. At the center stood Malakar, the Arch‑Lich: an immortal god of ossified ego, looming over the shattered fragments of his own essence-saving phylactery; the sole objective of my last successful hunt. It had forced Malakar here, to his catacomb bastion and arcane laboratory. Just where I needed him to be... The intrusion did not unnerve Malakar; he barely even turned to face me as I brazenly walked through his noxious defences, loud footsteps heralding my approach. Letting out a dry, rattling laugh like dead leaves scraping across concrete, he began to monologue... Predictable. “You should not have come here, foolish creature,” the Lich sneered, his petulant voice echoing off the walls of his brutally bleak vault of mortal obsession. “You cannot survive me or my genius. Unlike me, you are bound by the frailties of your flesh." he ranted. The thick cloud swirled around me, disgustingly heavy. "Unlike me, one breath of this ruinous rot has doomed you." The Lich thought he’d won. They always do. But it was time to cut his odious celebrations short. "Unlike—" Out of the stagnant fog, two metallic canisters flew through the air in silently graceful, overlapping arcs. “What?” Malakar hissed, the green eldritch motes of necromantic energy that hovered in his hollow eye sockets swivelled, tracking the object's trajectories glinting in the reflection of a specimen jar. Confusion turned to contempt as he spied the cylinders tinkling across the cobbles, their journey finishing at his feet. “Insolent—!” He went to raise a skeletal hand, gathering a bolt of lightning to end this game. He pivoted his cadaverous palm, about to unleash devastation into the familiar vapor surrounding his foe. Whuiii—THWACK! Before the spell could reach his gaunt fingertips, a custom‑crafted bolt bored a hole through the fog, whistling, slamming straight through the lich's half-raised hand. An intensely focused ruby spark pierced the void as he traced its origin. The suddenly violent impact had splintered bone and thought, instantly disrupting the spell and any retort. Emerging from the toxic shadow — an ominous wave of a tattered leather duster snapped the cloying stench aside; a Cloak of Displacement blurred the air behind me, forming a ghostly mirage. My heavy repeating crossbow was levelled, the consecrated sigils along its dark wood stock gleaming with a steady, lethal sun‑like warmth. But it wasn't the weapon that made the Lich freeze, nor was it the imminent threat of violence; it was my strangely twisted, inhuman visage exhaling the very thing my target was blathering about. My pitch‑black veins were no longer dark. The necrotising airborne particles had catalysed the dormant serum I had infused my warm blood with earlier: Awakened by a poison meant to kill, my Dhampir heritage panicked and clawed back toward unlife. The black grids across my jaw, neck, and hands flared into a brilliantly morbid, crimson-neon glow. The metabolic friction of my cells violently tearing apart infected tissue and rebuilding it at a molecular level burned like recursive liquid hellfire. The trap was sprung. Malakar hadn’t killed me — the atmosphere that he relied upon for the safeguarding of his home had triggered my autophagy serum, turning my immune system into an aggressively self‑regenerating cannibalistic hybrid; the living embodiment of symbiotic vampirism. Just as planned—no blinking, no hesitation, no time. Advancing on the undead mage like a flash, my ghastly red illuminating flesh paled in the light of his stunned panic. “Unlike you,” my voice was flat and cold as the grave, “I do my fucking research.” The crossbow sang twice more in rapid succession. Gold‑engraved bolts thudded through bone and stone alike, pinning Malakar's feet to the frigid floor and locking him in place for the coup de grâce. FHOOOM! The Ghostfire canisters detonated with perfect timing. A blinding pillar of white‑hot azure fire erupted from the floor, engulfing the Lich in a silencing inferno bereft of any magic that could prolong his terribly protracted existence. It was over in seconds. An eerily incandescent symphony of volatile chemistry—divine inspiration wreathed in damnation. There was no screaming. No grand wails of pain or threats of vengeance. Only the crackling rumble of roasted hubris — and the natural order restored as an ancient tyrant’s legacy turned to pristine white ash. The azure flames caught the surrounding shelves, melting bone and roaring through forbidden tomes. Centuries of black‑magic scrolls and dark research caught fire, turning into thousands of burning, glowing blue leaves drifting toward the ceiling. For a long while I stood in the ethereal glare, watching all that knowledge go up in smoke. My hand drifted to my belt as I turned toward the vault doors, thumb brushing the polished brass on the last of the Ghostfire canisters. Time to burn the rest of this god‑forsaken place. FIN.
