A lot of AI platforms that had free is pushing for paid accounts either by cutting out free entirely or cutting it back. In the last year I've seen a number cut out free except for maybe a 1 or 2 week intro freebie amount. It's expensive just to store people's output and it is prodigious but I'm thinking maybe investor funding is drying up as investors want to see a return. I'm sad tho. The 20 daily free videos on Grok was nice. I should have taken more advantage of it but I got distracted.
I also did not use it. I guess problem is that AI is much more expensive then we think. It is estimated that Anthropic pays $5,000 for the computing power they offer currently at their $200 Claude Code plan. Here is the source (but Id id not had tiem to fully read it): https://www.forbes.com/sites/annatong/2026/03/05/cursor-goes-to-war-for-ai-coding-dominance/
That article is very interesting. The idea that someone who can't code can now code through AI is mindboggling to me and that they are already shifting away from people needing to double check the code and just letting it run. But how are they able to sustain the cost if they are spending more money using AI than they receive from subscribers? It doesn't feel sustainable to me. Which explains why so many platforms are pushing people towards subbing. They must be bleeding money.
The image you posted here is only half, but the same image is available in full size on Reddit (https://www.reddit.com/r/grok/comments/1rxt5aj/grok_is_dead_for_free_users/). Why did you crop it instead of posting the full version? Is it because of copyright issues?
