Beneath the Clockwork Waterfall
By velvet_hour_x
A short story inspired by the Mechanical Garden . My artwork submission: https://budgetpixel.com/p/66936 The Clockwork Cloud Conservatory was one of the city's most beloved attractions. Beneath its immense glass dome, visitors marveled at the towering mechanical waterfall, wandered through lush clockwork gardens, admired graceful robot butterflies, and watched majestic bronze animals come to life among the trees. For Yuchen and Ruoxi... It was simply where everything began. Yuchen was twenty-one. Ruoxi was nineteen. They were simply two strangers visiting the Clockwork Cloud Conservatory on the same afternoon. Standing before the magnificent waterfall, Ruoxi held up her phone, trying to take a selfie. She smiled. Checked the photo. Made a face. Adjusted her hair. Tried again. After what must have been her twentieth selfie, she tilted her head, adjusted the angle, tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear, and tried again. Watching from a short distance away, Yuchen couldn't help smiling. Ruoxi looked up. Their eyes met. A faint blush spread across her cheeks as she quickly looked away. Realising she had caught him staring, Yuchen hesitated for a moment before walking over. "Sorry... I wasn't trying to stare." Ruoxi laughed awkwardly. "It's okay." He glanced at the phone in her hand. "Would you like me to help?" She smiled and handed him her phone. He stepped back, making sure the waterfall filled the background. Snap. Snap. Snap. After taking a few more photos, he returned the phone. Ruoxi looked through them, smiling. "These are much better." Yuchen chuckled. "You didn't need to try so hard." She laughed. "I know... I kept trying to make myself look better." Yuchen looked at her from head to toe, pretending to study her seriously. "...Didn't work." Ruoxi stared at him. "...Hey!" He burst into laughter. "I'm kidding." She couldn't help laughing too. Somehow... Neither of them felt like ending the conversation. They stood there chatting about university life, favourite foods, movies, places they hoped to visit one day, and all the little things that strangers somehow found easy to share. Then Ruoxi's phone rang. She answered. "Hi, are you here?" "...I'm still inside the Clockwork Cloud Conservatory." "...Okay, I'll see you outside." She ended the call. "I should go." Yuchen nodded. "I won't keep your boyfriend waiting." She blinked. "My boyfriend?" "You sounded pretty happy." She laughed. "No." "...She's my friend." "...A female friend." Yuchen rubbed the back of his neck. "Well... that's embarrassing." Ruoxi smiled. "I should go." She turned and walked toward the exit. Yuchen watched her disappear into the crowd. A strange feeling settled in his chest. Before he could overthink it, he hurried after her. "Excuse me!" Ruoxi turned around. He took a small breath. "Would it be okay if we exchanged contacts?" She smiled. "Sure." That evening, Yuchen's phone lit up. Ruoxi: Thanks again for helping me take those photos today. 😊 He smiled before replying. The next evening they chatted again. Two weeks later, they met for dinner. Then another. Before long, they were meeting almost every weekend and messaging each other every day. Three months passed. Somewhere between all the conversations and laughter... Yuchen had fallen in love. One Saturday, Yuchen invited Ruoxi back to the conservatory. For the entire week beforehand, he had rehearsed a confession over and over in his mind. On the train. Before going to sleep. Even while brushing his teeth. Every version sounded awkward. As they wandered through the conservatory that afternoon, laughing as they always did, the words refused to come out. His heart pounded with every step. Before he knew it, they had reached the conservatory gift shop at the exit. Yuchen's heart sank. The afternoon had slipped away. He had imagined countless ways to tell her how he felt. Yet he still hadn't found the courage. Then, as they wandered through the gift shop, Ruoxi stopped in front of a small photobooth. She turned to him with a smile. "We've never taken a photo together." "We should," Yuchen nodded. They stepped inside. Just before the countdown began, Ruoxi gently slipped her arm through his. Yuchen froze. His heart pounded so loudly that he barely heard the machine. Three... Two... One... Flash. The photograph was taken. Ruoxi naturally let go and walked toward the counter where the photos would be printed. Yuchen stood there for a second. He took a deep breath and walked after her. Before she reached the counter... He gently held her hand. Ruoxi looked down. Then up at him. A warm smile slowly spread across her face. Without saying a word... She intertwined her fingers with his. The years passed more quickly than either of them expected. When the time came, Yuchen chose to propose at the Clockwork Cloud Conservatory. Ruoxi said yes before he had even finished asking. They wandered into the gift shop and bought two small brass gear keychains engraved with their names. "They're expensive," Yuchen laughed. "Some things are worth keeping," Ruoxi replied. He grinned. "Give it a year. You'll probably lose it." Ruoxi looked up at him, pretending to be offended. "Excuse me?" Yuchen grinned. "I'm just preparing for the inevitable." Ruoxi smiled, slipped the brass gear carefully into her bag, and said, "We'll see." A few months later, they returned once again. This time, they stood before the magnificent waterfall in wedding attire as the photographer counted them down for the first photographs of their new life together. Every year after that, they returned. Sometimes to celebrate good news. Sometimes simply to escape the busy world outside. Later they brought their children. Then, years later, their grandchildren. The conservatory evolved with each passing decade. New flowers and animals were installed. Old gardens were restored. But the great waterfall never ceased to flow, and the giant bronze gear behind it never stopped turning. Year after year, Yuchen and Ruoxi quietly grew old together. One spring morning, Ruoxi returned with her granddaughter. Her granddaughter wandered a short distance away, happily taking photographs of the magnificent mechanical waterfall with her phone. Ruoxi opened her handbag and took out a small velvet pouch. Inside lay two worn brass gears. One engraved Ruoxi . The other Yuchen . She gently traced her thumb across his name. A few moments later, her granddaughter returned and quietly sat beside her. She noticed the two brass gears resting in her grandmother's hand. Her expression softened. "I miss Grandpa." Ruoxi looked at her granddaughter. She reached over and gently brushed a few strands of hair behind the girl's ear. Then she smiled. "So do I." For a moment, they sat in comfortable silence, listening to the endless rhythm of the waterfall. Then Ruoxi looked at the two tiny brass gears. "When we bought these, your grandpa joked that I'd lose mine one day." She chuckled softly and carefully placed both brass gears back into the velvet pouch. Then she stood up and held out her hand. "Come on." "I want to show you where your grandpa first made me laugh." Together they walked toward the waterfall. Behind the cascading water, the great bronze gear continued its slow, steady turning. As it always had. As it always would. Patiently keeping time for every story that began before its waterfall. -End-
