The kitsune looked up as a beat-up SUV dropped into his garden. The poor thing was so rusted that it shivered into dust as soon as it hit the ground. The professor emerged with his pet iguana. He looked at his very dead machine and shrugged. "Oh Professor," said the kitsune. "I wasn't expecting you today. I just got your letter and haven't opened it yet." "That's alright," the professor said in his gravelly voice. "What year is it?" "1826" "Disregard it. I wrote it 50 years ago." "You wrote it in 1776?" "No. I wrote it in 1826 but I've been to 1876 for a while now until I could fix my machine to come back." "Have some tea and tell me all about it." "I was planning to go to the future back then and wanted someone to know in case I didn't come back." "It sounds like you succeeded." "I went to the past first and found this little fella. Then I overshot returning and got stuck in the American wild west. I had to make a part, redo some wiring. Not a lot of supplies out there. Took years to get it working again. Then I tried again. Went to 2026 and it broke again. I found an old SUV i could adapt. I don't know why the outside rusts whenever I change times. That seems to be the main problem. I've been thinking about it tho. " "I'm glad to see you're back again, old friend. Tho I saw you a week ago, it's good to know you're safe." The professor looks over at the dusty hill of rust in the garden, "I don't think I'll be going anywhere soon. Pity. I just got it working. I'll have to find another vehicle." He sipped his tea. "Well good news is I probably haven't been reported missing if I've only been gone a week." "No," said the kitsune calmly. "In the week you've been gone, the newspaper have reported your murder and the search is on to find your body." "What? Why? I haven't been gone long." "Well the King has been assassinated." "My father was killed?" "Yes, you're the new king." The Kitsune raised his teacup, "Long live the King." "Well, shit."
