The witch-vampire noble loved her secret sanctuary, her library beneath the lake. Not a quiet library, mind you. Her newest captive roared from the dungeon below, chains rattling with admirable vigor. She smiled. Such vigor would suffuse his blood as she dined. As she inked the delicate kingfisher, she sipped the blood of her last victim. Fools never researched their prey. Her Noble sire certainly hadn’t. He'd seen a fragile beauty easily snatched at night. He'd caught her by surprise on her walk to dig up bones. Her fault, she admitted. Not one she'd make again. Her sire drank her, assuming he'd bind her. But the undead cannot enthrall a necromancer. She'd rose as a vampire—unbroken, unbent. She played the mindless thrall, dusting his library while studying his books. He never discovered her witchy powers. He was just like the old necromancer. Since women couldn't be apprentices, only tolerated as servants or mistresses, she'd secretly study his spells between dusting and sweeping. When she escaped with his 5 best grimoires, graveyard dust and bones, he angrily pursued her. That was her first kill—and her first ghost servant. Even in death, he was a grumpy cuss. Killing never used to be her preference but fresh corpses were necessary for some spells. Grave‑robbing was better. Less missing townsfolk meant fewer hasty relocations. Packing was such a pain. Later, as a new vamp, her research among her sire's books paid off. She bound him, drained him, and used his death to forge the library under the lake. No one could find it. Her witchy compass opened a door miles away. Another bellow below. This idiot had tried to force himself on her in the woods. Still she checked, researched him. After all her sire's relatives put out a bounty when his library and worldly goods disappeared. She smiled. This man was as he appeared. A brutal bandit. No warlock, no vamp—just a man who misjudged a woman. Now his blood, bones and vigor would feed her magic. Life was good.
