Tea with Alice and the Cheshire Cat Special Guest Stars: Pauline Hopkins and Reuel Briggs Pauline Hopkins was a pioneering African American novelist, editor, and journalist whose early‑20th‑century serialized fiction blended gothic mystery, occult science, and Black historical reclamation. Her most ambitious work, Of One Blood (1902–1903), is one of the earliest African‑centered speculative fiction and Afrofuturism. At the center of Of One Blood is Reuel Briggs, a brilliant but emotionally detached Harvard medical student who passes as white while concealing his African ancestry. His journey leads him to Telassar, a secret, ancient African civilization of immense spiritual and technological sophistication. Hopkins uses Reuel’s discovery to invert the colonial “lost world” trope, making Africa a source of advanced knowledge and ancestral power.
