“The Maskmaker of the Grand Canal” In Venice, a lone gondola drifts along the Grand Canal at twilight. Inside sits an elderly maskmaker carving a new mask that glows with shifting patterns. As he works, reflections in the water show different centuries of Venice layered atop each other: merchant ships, masked balls, modern tourists, and ancient festivals.
