About this image

A retro exterior view of the Astrodome in Houston, surrounded by a sea of classic cars and pedestrians entering the venue on a sunny day. The midcentury architecture, clear blue sky, and the Texas flag convey a lively, iconic era of American sports arenas and large-scale events.

Ah, I just made a connection. The last verse of Neil Young's song Pocohontas, mentions the 'Astrodome'. Never knew exactly what he was singing about, maybe now I do. Or maybe there are other places named the same.

@Troxley thanks for sharing all the history. Must have been amazing back in the day, before the days of stadiums with rooves that can be open or closed

The Astrodome has the distinction of being the world's first indoor stadium. The heat and the humidity (along with the rain every so often) was a deterrent for Houston to attract professional sports teams, especially baseball. When it was opened in 1965 it was considered a engineering marvel as its 220m in diameter and the ceiling is 63m above the playing surface (all without any columns supporting it in the center. It was a big deal at the time. People came from all over the US and the world to tour the 'Dome. Thus Neil Young's desire to discuss about it with Pocahontas and Marlon Brando It's named for the Houston Astros, the baseball team that played there from 1963 to 1999 when they moved to a new stadium in Downtown Houston. It's hosted many concerts, Billie Jean King's Tennis match against Bobby Riggs, Muhammad Ali's famous bout with Cleveland Williams in 1966 (there is a famous picture of the fight from overhead after Ali knocked Williams down-done in the days before drones.

To my knowedge there isn't another Astrodome by name; there is the Superdome in New Orleans which is bigger than the Astrodome (83m from field to ceiling. Sadly the Astrodome is no longer in use. With the Texans (American Football) arrival in 2000 they wanted a new state of the art stadium (which they built next to the Astrodome). That became the new place for concerts and sporting events in Houston. George Strait played the last concert there. It's been non-compliant with the city's fire code since 2008 and despite the numerous plans to revitalize the facility (mostly due to the massive expense of renovating it), it has stayed vacant since.

@Troxley oh no, no apology needed. I am a curious fellow, so throughly enjoyed all the snippets.
