I figured most people would go with the grand masquerade ball with beautiful women and couple dancing, so wanted to come up with something a little different. I wanted the visual to have a reference to something, and one of the first thoughts that came to mind was Tuxedo Mask, the male protagonist of the Sailor Moon manga/anime as he was always wearing a mask. I later developed the visual into a fashion shot of him posing with the cast of Sailor Moon, all in masks representing their respective colors. The low ranking (ended up 37 out of 56 entries) was a little unexpected and disappointing, but I guess I probably lost votes due to the fact that it is not in an obvious social ball/ party setting, as implied by masquerade. More often than not, I tried to make the visual look pretty but forgot to link it back to the theme.

They are from the Sailor Moon manga/anime. Not sure if you are familiar with the franchise from the 90s, or I did not present them obviously enough.

Beautiful image and perhaps you are right that it didn't lean enough into the masked-ball. I also had no idea of the backstory, whihc maybe is an issue
