“Would You Like to Spend the Night With Me While Your Husband Watches Us Leave?”

SILVER & SAPPHIRE MAGAZINE Love Younger. Live Larger. THE DIRECT APPROACH — JUST ASK! Some women wait for romance. Others make it happen. In this recurring Silver & Sapphire feature, successful, wealthy women over 50 share how one remarkably direct question to a beautiful younger woman led to an unexpected night, an extraordinary offer, and sometimes a completely new life together. This Issue: Alexandra, 63 & Sophie, 30 A cheating husband. His pregnant mistress. A wife who has lost everything. And an extraordinarily wealthy older woman who decides that subtlety is terribly overrated. HER STORY — ALEXANDRA, 63 Alexandra von Rosenberg was sixty-three, German-born, twice divorced, and one of the wealthiest private investors in the American hospitality industry. Her fortune, estimated at $480 million, included luxury hotels, commercial property, private equity investments, and substantial interests in several European hospitality companies. She maintained residences in New York, Miami, Munich, and Monaco, traveled aboard her own aircraft, and possessed a jewelry collection that had been featured in several international luxury magazines. Alexandra was also a woman who had grown spectacularly tired of sleeping alone. "I've spent forty years negotiating business deals," she told us. "When I see something I want, I don't waste six months pretending I haven't noticed it." Although she'd been married twice to men, her relationships with women had eventually become far more satisfying. "Men always wanted to prove something. Women generally wanted to know whether I was happy. I discovered rather late in life which question mattered more." At sixty-three, Alexandra had no intention of retiring, dressing conservatively, or allowing anyone to dictate whom she should love. She favored beautifully tailored short dresses, expensive high heels, and spectacular diamond jewelry. Her greatest irritation was being told that a woman of her age ought to behave more discreetly. "Discretion is useful when negotiating a hotel acquisition," she remarked. "It is considerably less useful when trying to convince a beautiful woman to come home with you." HER STORY — SOPHIE, 30 Sophie Miller had once been happily married. Or so she believed. At twenty-five, she married Daniel, a charming financial adviser who persuaded her to give up her promising career in advertising and help him establish his own investment consultancy. For four years, Sophie worked without a formal salary, managed his appointments, entertained clients, handled administrative matters, and trusted her husband completely. Then she discovered that Daniel had been transferring company assets into accounts she could not access. He had also been having an affair with her best friend, Melissa. When Sophie confronted him, Daniel announced that he wanted a divorce and that Melissa was pregnant. But the betrayal went much further. Because Sophie had signed guarantees for several business loans at Daniel's request, she suddenly faced substantial financial liabilities, while Daniel claimed that the company had no significant remaining assets. Their elegant apartment belonged to a holding company controlled by Daniel's family. Her car was leased through the business. Her savings had been invested in the company. Within weeks, Sophie had no home, no income, and very little money. Then her father died unexpectedly following a stroke. "My father was the only person who kept telling me I would survive," Sophie recalled. "When he died, I honestly didn't know how I was supposed to keep going." Her mother, who had never approved of Daniel, offered emotional support but was herself living on a modest pension and could provide little financial assistance. Sophie took a temporary position at a hotel reception desk, rented a tiny furnished room, and began rebuilding her life. By the time she met Alexandra, she had been separated for eleven months. Her divorce remained unresolved. And Daniel was still making her life miserable. THE ENCOUNTER — JUST ASK! S&S: Sophie, where did you first meet Alexandra? Sophie: "At a restaurant in Manhattan. I had gone there because Daniel insisted we needed to discuss some divorce paperwork." S&S: That sounds unpleasant. Sophie: "It was worse than unpleasant. He arrived with Melissa, who was visibly pregnant, and introduced her as his future wife. Then he started explaining why I should accept his settlement offer." Alexandra: "I happened to be sitting at the next table." Sophie: "Daniel was being absolutely horrible. He kept telling me I ought to be grateful he'd offered anything at all, considering I hadn't contributed financially to our marriage." S&S: After you had worked for him for four years? Sophie: "Exactly. I was trying not to cry." Alexandra: "I listened for perhaps ten minutes before deciding I'd had enough." S&S: What did you do? Alexandra: "I stood up, walked over to their table, and asked the young lady whether she was married to the unpleasant gentleman sitting opposite her." Sophie: "I nearly fell off my chair!" Alexandra: "When she said they were divorcing, I asked whether she was free to date other people." Sophie: "Daniel asked who on earth she was." Alexandra: "I ignored him." S&S: And then? Sophie: "She looked straight at me and said, 'Darling, would you like to spend the night with me while your husband watches us leave?'" S&S: In front of everybody? Sophie: "In front of Daniel, Melissa, the waiter, and practically half the restaurant!" Alexandra: "I believe I spoke at a perfectly reasonable volume." Sophie: "I was absolutely speechless!" S&S: What did Daniel say? Sophie: "He started laughing and asked whether she was seriously propositioning his wife." Alexandra: "I told him, 'Soon to be your former wife, I understand. And yes, I am.'" Sophie: "Then Daniel said something incredibly rude about her age." Alexandra: "He asked whether I was old enough to be her grandmother." S&S: How did you respond? Alexandra: "I told him, 'Possibly, darling. But unlike you, I know how to treat a lady.'" Sophie: "The waiter actually started coughing because he was trying not to laugh!" Alexandra: "Then I turned back to Sophie and said, 'I have a beautiful penthouse nearby. I'm sixty-three, extremely wealthy, entirely unattached, and I think you're absolutely gorgeous. Would you like to come home with me?'" S&S: Sophie, had you ever dated a woman before? Sophie: "Never! I'd never even seriously considered it." Alexandra: "Which made my invitation rather more adventurous than I'd anticipated." Sophie: "I looked at Daniel, who was staring at me as though I'd lost my mind, and suddenly realized something. For nearly five years, I'd been doing what he wanted. I'd given up my job, my money, my independence, and practically my entire personality." S&S: And? Sophie: "I turned back to Alexandra and asked, 'Does your penthouse have a good view?'" Alexandra: "I told her it had a magnificent view." Sophie: "Then I stood up, took her hand, and said, 'Well, let's go and look at it.'" S&S: What happened to Daniel? Sophie: "He shouted my name across the restaurant!" Alexandra: "I looked back and said, 'Don't wait up, darling. I rather doubt she'll be coming home tonight.'" Sophie: "I nearly collapsed laughing!" THE NIGHT — A VERY DIFFERENT KIND OF COMPANY S&S: Sophie, what happened when you reached Alexandra's penthouse? Sophie: "I discovered that her idea of a penthouse was three floors of absolute luxury overlooking Central Park." Alexandra: "She spent several minutes staring through the windows." Sophie: "Then I asked whether she actually owned the place." Alexandra: "I told her I generally prefer to own the places where I leave my jewelry." Sophie: "Which was when I began to realize just how wealthy she was." Alexandra ordered dinner from a nearby restaurant, opened an excellent bottle of champagne, and suggested that Sophie take off the uncomfortable shoes she'd been wearing all evening. Sophie: "She noticed my feet were hurting. Daniel had never noticed things like that." Alexandra: "She was wearing rather beautiful heels, but they clearly weren't doing her any favors." S&S: Were you nervous about spending the night with an older woman? Sophie: "Terribly. Alexandra was more than twice my age, and I had never been intimate with a woman before." Alexandra: "I told her we could simply have dinner and talk. There was no obligation to do anything else." Sophie: "But after a while, I realized I wanted to kiss her." S&S: So who made the first move? Sophie: "I did! I asked whether I could kiss her." Alexandra: "And I told her she'd better do it before I lost patience." Sophie: "I thought that first kiss would feel strange. Instead, it felt wonderful." Alexandra: "She was considerably more enthusiastic than she'd initially led me to believe." Sophie: "And Alexandra was so affectionate and attentive. I had spent years feeling as though I was only useful to someone. With her, I felt beautiful, wanted, and genuinely appreciated." S&S: Did the age difference matter? Sophie: "Not once we were together. I had imagined a woman in her sixties would be reserved and perhaps a little old-fashioned." Alexandra: "How disappointing for her." Sophie: "Believe me, there was nothing disappointing about that night!" THE MORNING AFTER — THE $25 MILLION QUESTION S&S: Alexandra, apparently the previous evening wasn't your most outrageous moment? Alexandra: "Oh, certainly not." Sophie: "I woke up around ten in the most beautiful bedroom imaginable. Alexandra was already sitting beside me in a silk robe, drinking coffee and reading something on her tablet." Alexandra: "I had been reviewing some documents." Sophie: "She kissed me good morning and asked whether I'd slept well." S&S: And what did you say? Sophie: "I told her it was the happiest night I'd experienced in years." Alexandra: "Then I asked whether she might like to repeat the experience." Sophie: "I said I'd love to." Alexandra: "So I asked, 'How would you feel about doing it for the next thirty years?'" S&S: Thirty years? Sophie: "I thought she was joking!" Alexandra: "I told her I wanted us to date properly, to travel together, and perhaps eventually to share a home. I had absolutely no intention of pretending the previous evening had been merely an amusing adventure." Sophie: "Then she said something that completely stunned me." S&S: Which was? Sophie: "She said, 'Darling, I have more money than I'll ever need. If we're going to build a life together, I want you to have financial security of your own. Would you be comfortable if I placed twenty-five million dollars into a trust for you?'" S&S: Twenty-five million dollars? Sophie: "I nearly fell out of bed!" Alexandra: "I thought it was a perfectly reasonable amount." Sophie: "I asked whether she'd gone completely insane." Alexandra: "I told her I'd been called worse." S&S: But that is an extraordinary offer after one night. Alexandra: "Naturally. And I wasn't proposing that we execute legal documents before breakfast. I was explaining what I would be willing to do if our relationship developed into something lasting. The trust would be hers, independent of me, and not conditional on her remaining my girlfriend." Sophie: "I told her I couldn't possibly accept something like that." Alexandra: "I said she didn't have to decide anything. We had plenty of time to get to know one another, and I would rather she concentrated on whether she liked me than on how much money I possessed." S&S: What about the divorce? Alexandra: "I offered to introduce her to a very capable attorney, entirely independent of my own legal team, who could help her understand her options." Sophie: "That was almost more overwhelming than the money. Someone was finally taking my problems seriously." Alexandra: "Then I asked whether she'd consider staying for the weekend." Sophie: "I asked, 'Just the weekend?'" Alexandra: "And I said, 'Darling, I'm hoping for considerably longer, but I don't want to frighten you before you've finished your coffee.'" S&S: And your answer? Sophie: "I kissed her and said yes." WHERE ARE THEY NOW? Twenty-two months later, Alexandra and Sophie are still together. Sophie has finalized her divorce and, with the assistance of independent legal counsel, successfully challenged several financial arrangements created during her marriage. She has also returned to the advertising industry, establishing a boutique marketing consultancy specializing in luxury hospitality clients. Alexandra provided introductions and encouragement, but Sophie insists that she wanted to rebuild her professional identity rather than simply become a wealthy woman's companion. The couple divide their time between New York, Monaco, and Munich. And the extraordinary trust? Alexandra eventually established it after they had been together for a year, with independent legal and financial advice for Sophie. Sophie says she still finds the amount almost impossible to comprehend. Sophie: "I never imagined that the worst dinner of my life would lead to the happiest relationship I've ever had." Alexandra: "I never imagined that interrupting an unpleasant conversation would result in finding the woman I wanted to spend the rest of my life with." S&S: And what happened to Daniel and Melissa? Sophie: "They separated before our divorce was finalized." Alexandra: "Such a pity." Sophie: "Alexandra!" Alexandra: "What? I'm expressing my deepest sympathy." S&S: Have you ever encountered Daniel again? Sophie: "Once. At a charity reception." Alexandra: "He approached us and asked whether Sophie was happy." S&S: And what did you say? Alexandra: "I told him, 'Darling, she's extremely happy. Would you like to see our holiday photographs?'" Sophie: "He walked away!" Alexandra: "Some people simply have no appreciation for beautiful photography." THE DIRECT APPROACH — JUST ASK!
