The Titans
By SouthamericanMyth
Southamerican myth here bringing a new blog post, days ago i wrote one about Enuma Elish, epic sumerian/mesopotamian text of the creation myth, now i bring the ol' and traditional greek mythology, particullaty the titans. The Titans In greek mythology, the titans were a group of deities, they were the first ruler of the cosmos, that means the world and the pre-historic/first-humankind. They born from two primordial gods, Uranus (personification of the sky) and Gaia (personification of the earth) they birth the 12 titans, 6 male and 6 females, also know as the first generation of titans. You can read and see the full image of everyone here on my pinterest collection https://pin.it/4hdt81fpG Adding to that 12 titans, there is also other 6 childrens of Uranus and Gaia, that sometimes are also refered as titans, those were 3 cyclops and 3 hecatoncheires (also know as hundred-handers, they were powerful giants of hundred arms and hundred heads, a very challenging thing to prompt... i made them one of them in the past on NC, didnt liked to much the result anyway). Uranus hated and feared this cyclops and hecatoncheires for their monstrosity or destructive power, so he imprisoned them on the Tartarus (a dark underworld place similar to hell concept). This make their mother Gaia very sad and angry, and lead to scheming Uranus overthrown, she planned with Cronus to defeat Uranus, in some sources the 12 titans fought him, but Cronus took his place and ruled the cosmos with his fellow titans. Cronus later will have childrens with Rhea, this children will later became the "Olympians", leading the succesion myth, overthrowing Cronus reign, an event known as "titanomachy" a 10-year war within some titans and Zeus with his brothers and the help of the cyclops and hecatoncheires. Cronus and Rhea sons are not considered titans, but their other siblings offspring are commonly called 2nd generation titans. Again you can see the full picture and description of everyone in my pinterest collection https://pin.it/gDklFSMa2 Some of this 2nd generation titans are participants of the titanomachy, Atlas was one of them who was punish by holding the celestial sphere, menoetius who was fulminated by Zeus thunderbolt, and posibly pallas who sometimes is confused with other pallas of the breed of the giants, almost in both cases defeated by Athena. Others maintained neutral, Leto and Asteria were important for giving birth to gods who will became also Olympians, Apollo and Artemis (Leto childs) and Hekate (Asteria and Perses daughter). Helios, Selene and Eos, maintained their god status and "keep working" alongside the olympians gods and being active and attested in many myths and traditions. Special mention on Epimetheus and Prometheus, who were involved in the creation of the current humankind. Bonus Info: -During Cronus reign, the humankind (a previous proto-humankind) lived long, didnt age and sick, they didnt feel pain and there always peace and plenty. -Despite that Gaia and Rhea were against Cronus because he devour/swallow every of his children that Rhea gave birth (except for Zeus who Gaia and Rhea saved). Cronus knew that one of his children will overthrown him in the future. -After Cronus defeated his father Uranus, he never released the cyclops and hecatoncheires from tartarus, or did for a short time and imprisioned them again, irritating Gaia again. -After the titanomachy (war between titans and olympians) most of the titans participant on it were punish, imprisioned on tartarus, this irritated Gaia, for revenge she created/gave birth to the giants/gigantes, leading the gigantomachy. -In ancient greece and classical greece period, most people worshiped the olympians gods, almost none of the titans were worshiped or had shrines, some of them are very obscure, only mentioned for participating on the titanomachy or for their offspring.
