The Baker and the Midnight Lily
By zerofriction
You slip the glowing silver letter into your apron pocket, give Barnaby a quick nod, and pull open the heavy oak door. The crisp autumn air greets you alongside the heavenly scent of freshly baked spiced sugar cookies. "Happy Halloween, Mabel!" Julian beams, his cheeks instantly flushing a dusty pink as he holds out the ribbon-wrapped basket. "I... um, brought you a warm batch of star-anise pastry twists from The Golden Crust. I thought you might like a snack before the festival rush." "Julian, you're sweet as sugar," you smile, taking the warm basket. Barnaby immediately investigates the ribbon with a playful paw. "But look at this!" You pull out the starry-black paper and hand it to him. As Julian reads the glowing silver script, his eyes grow as round as pumpkin pies. "A Midnight Lily?" he gasps, looking from the letter to you. "Mabel, that's incredible! But... the woods near Whispering Ridge can get awfully tricky around sunset. Friendly ghosts and trickster fairies love playing pranks on Halloween eve." "Which is why I'm asking you to come with me," you say, flashing him a bright, mischievous grin. "Every great witch needs a brave baker on a quest. What do you say?" Julian’s eyes light up, a confident grin spreading across his face as he straightens his apron. "Count me in! I'll bring my flour sacks—great for spotting invisible fairy paths!" Together, with Barnaby perched comfortably on your shoulder, the three of you set off toward the edge of Pumpkin Hollow, where the trees turn deep crimson and gold. The autumn wind rustled through the canopy above, showering the winding path with a cascade of amber leaves that crunched softly beneath Julian’s boots. All around them, the festival lanterns of Pumpkin Hollow were just beginning to flicker to life in the distance, casting warm, dancing pools of light across the misty meadows. Julian walked closely beside you, occasionally sneaking proud glances at the starry-black paper while Barnaby let out a contented purr right against your ear, batting lazily at a stray lock of hair. The sweet, buttery aroma of the star-anise pastry twists drifted from the ribbon-wrapped basket, mixing pleasantly with the crisp, pine-scented air and keeping any lingering autumn chills at bay. As the cozy lights of the village faded further behind them, the shadows between the trees grew longer and deeper, taking on playful, distorted shapes that seemed to shift just out of the corner of your eye. The forest grew wonderfully hushed, save for the occasional distant hoot of an owl and the soft rustling of unseen woodland creatures whispering secrets in the underbrush. After a short walk, you spot the Old Oak Tree, its massive trunk twisted into a mysterious, doorway-shaped hollow. As you approach, you notice three distinct things in and around the tree: * [Choice A] Reach into the dark, mossy hollow of the trunk where a faint blue light glimmers. * [Choice B] Examine a tiny, carved wooden door set into the roots at the base of the oak, surrounded by glowing toadstools. * [Choice C] Look up into the golden autumn branches overhead, where a shiny silver key sways gently in the breeze. Type A, B, or C to make your choice!

Nice story continuation! I'm definitely not sticking my hand into some glowing hollow of a trunk, so A is out. B looks interesting, but it's hard to ignore a shiny key swinging in the breeze. So, C it is again! One editing note, though: You change between present and past tense in this and your last blog. Present tense works best for CYOA (choose-your-own-adventures), so you may want to consider converting the past tense sentences to present tense.
