Pumpkin Spice and Spellcraft

By zerofriction

The crisp autumn wind carries the scent of roasted chestnuts and fallen leaves through the cobblestone streets of Pumpkin Hollow. Paper lanterns glow orange from every porch, and witch hats adorn almost every window—though none as authentic as the real velvet one sitting atop your head. You are Mabel, a eighteen-year-old witch with bright hazel eyes, copper curls that defy gravity, and a knack for charm magic. Today is October 31st, the day of the annual Hallow-Eve Harvest Market, and your little apothecary shop, The Wandering Cauldron, is fully decorated. Strings of glowing fairy lights crisscross your wooden rafters, and mini pumpkin jack-o'-lanterns float gently near the ceiling. Beside you on the counter, your familiar—a plump black cat named Barnaby wearing a yellow bowtie—lets out a soft meow, gently nudging a steaming mug of spiced cinnamon tea toward your hand. "We have thirty minutes before the market festival officially opens, Mabel," Barnaby says (you're the only one who can hear his sassy, cultured inner voice). "Have you decided on your showcase spell for the town contest?" You tap your chin thoughtfully, casting a quick glance down at your enchanted familiar. Barnaby—a plump, pristine tuxedo cat with a penchant for aristocratic commentary—sits delicately atop a sack of flour, his tail flicking in rhythmic impatience. Out in the cobblestone square, the muffled bustle of early-morning merchants setting up their colorful wooden stalls echoes through the half-open door. Crisp autumn air drafts inside, carrying the crisp scents of fallen leaves, roasted chestnuts, and anticipation, but you remain tantalizingly undecided. Truthfully, the Town Contest has never been a simple affair. Winning this year means not only bragging rights among the local artisans, but a coveted spot on the Grand Council’s seasonal trade roster. Last year, old Elijah stunned the crowd with a fountain that sprouted luminescent flower petals, and you know the judges will be expecting something even more spectacular this morning. Your fingers trace the well-worn leather spine of your spellbook resting on the counter, fluttering through mentally cataloged incantations, warmth, and whimsy. "Don't look at me like that, Barnaby," you murmur back under your breath, careful not to let the early passersby outside think you're muttering to empty air. "A true masterpiece can't be rushed, especially when half the town is expecting magic they can actually taste." You take a deep breath, letting the familiar comfort of your sanctuary anchor your bouncing thoughts, and slowly turn to sweep your eyes across the warm, cluttered room. You look around your cozy shop. On one side sits your Baking Nook, overflowing with enchanted ingredients for your famous float-away cinnamon rolls and spellbound pumpkin pies. On the other side is your Potion Workbench, lined with shimmering pastel glass vials filled with sparkling luck-charms and whispering autumn vapors. Suddenly, a soft tap-tap-tap sounds at your shop window. Outside stands Julian, the town’s sweet, clumsy apprentice baker from The Golden Crust, holding a woven basket wrapped with a purple ribbon and looking a bit nervous. At the same time, a mysterious golden envelope slides under your front door, sealed with a shimmering wax stamp of a glowing moon. What do you do first? * [Choice A] Open the front door to see what Julian brought from the bakery. * [Choice B] Pick up the mysterious golden envelope from the floor. * [Choice C] Focus on your magical preparations and head to the Potion Workbench to brew a grand festival spell. Type A, B, or C to make your choice!
