Whispers on the Mountain

"Look up there," you say, pointing toward the sweeping upper boughs of the Old Oak. Nestled among the vibrant amber leaves, a dainty silver key sways on a midnight-blue ribbon, catching the golden afternoon light like a falling star. "I've got this!" Julian says eagerly. He sets his pastry basket safely on a flat stone, rubs his hands together, and leaps up to grab the lowest branch. With impressive agility for a boy usually stuck behind a bakery counter, he swings himself up into the canopy, his copper-brown hair dusted with falling golden leaves as he climbs higher. "Be careful, Julian!" you call up, your heart doing a little flutter as he stretches out along a long, mossy limb. "Got it!" he calls down triumphantly, untying the ribbon and holding the key high. But as he pulls it free, a soft click echoes through the hollow of the tree trunk. A hidden compartment in the oak's bark slides open with a quiet puff of iridescent lavender smoke, revealing a rolled-up parchment scroll bound with a tiny glowing ribbon! Julian scoots back down the trunk, dropping gracefully onto his feet next to you, a bit out of breath but wearing a proud grin. He hands you the silver key and says, "Teamwork!" You open the scroll. Inside is an enchanted map of Whispering Ridge, drawn in shimmering liquid moonlight. The ink drifts across the parchment like tiny living clouds, showing three distinct paths leading up toward the summit where the Midnight Lily grows: * The Whispering Hollow Trail: A winding path through a grove of ancient, singing birches where friendly autumn spirits are known to gather. * The Pumpkin Lantern Path: A bright, festive cobblestone trail lined with floating, glowing jack-o'-lanterns that bob merrily in the autumn air. * The Misty Brook Shortcut: A misty, pebbled creek bed that leads straight up the mountain ridge—the fastest route, though shrouded in thick Halloween fog. Barnaby hops onto a nearby boulder, purring loudly as he taps the parchment with a velvet paw. "The key definitely unlocks the protective glass chest at the mountain peak, Mabel. Now we just need to pick our way up before the sun dips down!" Julian pulls out a warm, fragrant star-anise twist from his basket and breaks off a piece for each of you. "Lead the way, Captain Mabel! Which path are we taking?" How do you choose to ascend Whispering Ridge? * [Choice A] Take The Whispering Hollow Trail to chat with the musical birch spirits and seek their guidance. * [Choice B] Follow The Pumpkin Lantern Path for a cozy, lantern-lit stroll up the festive mountain road. * [Choice C] Rush up The Misty Brook Shortcut to reach the summit in record time before the moon reaches its peak. Type A, B, or C to make your choice!
