QT Notification Flood Conundrum
By David Preece
Great mind's think alike or fools seldom differ. This morning I see @dirty_biker beat me to the punch, publishing his blog on QT's and the associated notification flood ( https://budgetpixel.com/blog/the-dark-side-of-the-qt ) . I had similar thoughts and was in-process. So no need to share all the background. It is true that when we create and share everybody, or at least vast majority, want their creations to be viewed, appreciate the likes and comments. This may be for many reasons not least of which is the dopamine and other endocrinal boosts we get from receving the likes and comments. And of course we operate in BP in a credit economy. People are needing the credits so pursue the daily reward. QTs have almost become a necessity. I have the same problem with volume of notifications which also now conceal notifications from other people that I would like to respond to. Many people are not QTing but do have a group they tag, a smaller more personal focused group. What to do? Maybe only the original post with the topic should be accomapanied with the full list of mentions? Stop QTing the same composition multiple times. I think once somebody has clicked through to your page, they'll browse if interested. Include multiple images if you have in the post. We should all agree, those who do it, to stop QTing the daily habitual posts, like Challenge Rejects, the first daily creation. Maybe prune your QT list, make it smaller, more focused on people that you have closer connection to, more interaction with. @King I appreciate that much of the time to develop new features goes into enhancements that will bring more users or focus on extending the models. But I think a capability to enable QT concept would be greatly appreciated. I imagine this could be something similar to the Blog capability. Create a QT topic entry with a link to a post, other people share links to their posted versions, separate subscription with unique notifications which could be notify me on new topics only or on all new and replies. As @justrob as mentioned before, I think we need more functionality around following. IFor example a separate area for notifications based on new posts by people I follow. Though some people are so prolific making multiple posts per day they could also become a flood. Or maybe just an option to filter all notifications based on user name? Right now, I spent most of my time responding to comments on the couple of posts I make a day plus the backlog of those from yesterday I never got to and that is building up. That eventually becomes a marathon session on a Saturday morning to clear the decks. I have almost no time at all to work through the mention notifications. I want to respond to every comment, appreciate and enjoy the creations of those people who interact with me. In this was real connections are made, connections that feel deeper than just follows and likes. These relationships and community is one of the most important aspects of active participation for me and the QT flood is a challenge. But I also want the likes for the credits, so am caught being part of the problem while wanting a solution
