Beginners often fall into the trap of painting thousands of individual strands from the very beginning, resulting in a chaotic, flat, wire-like texture. Real hair does not present as millions of isolated lines; it behaves as overlapping volumetric masses that bundle together, catch directional light, and break off into fine translucent flyaways at the edges. By treating hair as three-dimensional shapes before adding microscopic details, you can render soft, lustrous hair and fur coats that carry real weight. Follow this five-step visual workflow to master hair and strand rendering. Step 1: Block Out Massive Base Volumes Do not paint individual strands on Step 1. Hair must first be understood as large, solid geometric shapes that wrap around the curvature of the head or body. Group Hair into Ribbons and Clumps: Divide the hair setup into 3–5 primary directional masses (such as front bangs, side locks, and back flow). Establish Base Values: Fill these large ribbon volumes with dark-to-medium base values using a large, solid-edged brush. Paint ambient occlusion shadows deep inside the crevices where hair masses overlap or touch the neck and scalp. Step 2: Sculpt Secondary Structure and Mid-Tone Flow Once the primary silhouette is established, divide the large base ribbons into secondary locks to build physical depth. Paint Highlight Bands Across Curves: Apply high-value light bands across the crests of hair curves where light hits directly.
