FOMORIANS irish celtic mythology
By SouthamericanMyth
JC back again, in this episode, continuing the Celtic mythology, in this particular case a specific group of supernatural beings from irish celt mythology, the Fomore / fomorians. Fomorians were a breed/race of people who inhabitated Ireland, one of the first ones, they are described to have supernatural features, to have a monster look, associated with chaos and destruction, some of them blatantly evil. They were mortal but not human, some sources mention they are offspring of some obscure deity/goddess, associated with water or they came from ocean depth, in other sources they came from the depth of earth, despise its mention its conection to the sea or described as sea-demons, in their few visual depictions or descriptions are mentioned aquatic/marine features, more commonly the few ones describes them as giant or ogre-like creatures. This group most notable lore is the war they have with the other divine/supernatural group named Thuatha Dé Dannan (most of them mentioned on my previous celtic blog post), the Second Battle of Mag Tuired (if youre curious, the first one was between the Thuatha Dé and the Fil Borgs, another group of people, Thuatha De were victorious), in this battle both side represented contrary struggle, classic good vs evil, being the fomorians the ones who represented the evil side. Lets start! INDECH Indech fought as a general in the Second Battle of Mag Tuired or as a king, in any case he was one of the chieftains and have authority on the fomorians and actively participated in the battlr of Mag Tuired. BALOR Prominent leader of the fomorians, king or chieftain, notable for have one big eye, know as "evil eye" wich had destructive powers, a single glance could be deadly. During the battle recently mentioned, the Thuata Dé champion Lugh defeated and slain him, Lugh also being his grandson. CETHLENN A seer and prophetess, wife of Balor, in is not detailed if she is from fomore breed or its part just by marriage, but the actively participated in the battle against the Thuata Dé, deadly wound Dagda Mor (mentioned in my previous blog), with Balor she is the mother of Ethniu (who later will become mother of Lugh) and prophesy that Balor grandson will defeat him. BRES A half-fomorian half-thuatha de, son of Elatha and Eriu, fomorian prince and thuatha de member respectely, during the first battle of Mag Tuired, Thuatha De King and champion Nuada lost his arm, being not able to be king according to their laws, Bres took the charge of being the king, his reign was awful mistreating the Thuata De and benefits fomorians, he was dethroned, he asked for help to the fomorians, making this an important event to the causes and start of the second batthle of Mag Tuired. ELATHA A fomorian leader, he was particullary described as handsome man with a long blonde hair, who contrast with the fomorian monstrosity look. He is the father of Bres, and another important Thuatha De members such as the Dagda and Ogma. Described as honorable and noble, associated with beauty, elegance, magic and wisdom. ETHNIU Daughter of the tyrannical Balor, she was locked in a tower because Balor knew the prohesy that his grandson will slain him, some version said that Cian, a member of the Thuatha De, or another local here, with help of magic could enter the tower, she give birth to three children, Balor ordered to drown them, one of them, Lugh, is rescue by a Sidhe spirit or a sea deity. TETHRA Tethra is a prominent Fomorian king in Irish mythology, renowned for ruling the Otherworld paradise Mag Mell and for his magical sword Orna, which recounted its deeds, symbolizing his power and connection to the supernatural. During the second battle of Mag Tuired he was slain by Ogma or Lugh, after that he became somewhat a death deaity ruling otherworld Mag Mell. CICHOL GRICENCHOS The earliest fomorian king mentioned, hostile with the first Ireland's settlers, sources mention he lived like 200 years, also his battle with the settlers involved magic use and cast for part of him, a potential old deity from an ancient tribe. CONAND A leader of the Fomorians who lived in a tower on Tory Island. He oppressed the followers of Nemed (one of those first group of Ireland settlers people), demanding a huge tribute of their produce and children. Eventually Nemed's people rose up and killed him, destroying his tower. SIDENOTES: -As i mentioned in my previous Celtic blog, most of the things we know is what others wrote about celts, and with a lot of years of distance, say that there is very few original or ancient source data of the fomorians further the battle mentioned and barely descriptions of how they look -The tower mentioned in Ethniu and Conand is the same tower -Lugh defeated Balor in a very similar way David killed Goliathm, most of the irish myth that survives were collect by christian monks, and there was an intention of somewhat link irish myths and folklore with biblical events by them -I have to use a lot of imagination to visually depict this fomorian guys, despriptions are very limited, and most you can find are modern fantasy things/re-telling. -Most of them i depicted with blue skin to visually reflect two things; their sea possibly origin and their monster/ogre not-human nature. -There is a few more fomorians listed names, but with no much further info than that, being member of the formorians, being in the second battle of Mag Tuired
