Evolution of Challenge Entry - Hydra

By Sealine

Going to start with my usual request: If you landed here, please take the time to clap this blog (up to 20 claps allowed per user). When the challenge came up for 'Legendary Creature' I knew I wanted to do something different. It's harder to stand out if you are the 3rd or 4th of the same subject a voter comes across. However, we also all know if you stray too far with originality, it won't go well either. I asked GPT for some suggestions and didn't like any of them. However, one suggestion reminded me of a sorceress and sea dragon that I eventually reworked into a hydra when I learned what they were. AI has been amazing for introducing me to myths and fantasy worlds I never knew existed. Like a lot of my early creations, the original sorceress and dragon was inspired by an avatar I had in YoWorld (left). The image on the right was created in July of 2025 on the first AI site I was on. I tried fancier models early on but never got anything else I really liked. The introduction of Nano Banana (right) and GPT 2 (left) led the creation of her as figurine. With a move to BudgetPixel, I pulled a lot of old favorite prompts and ran them here. She got recreated with GPT 1.5 several times as I experimented with different styles and ideas. At some point, I heard of a hydra and remembering this image, I revamped my prompt. There were several variations, but this was one of my favorites (also GPT 1.5). On a related note, one of my sons told me about a terrifying false hydra from D&D. Of course, I had to see what GPT 1.5 thought it looked like with a simple prompt, "Create a false hydra from dungeons and dragons." I'm not much into horror art so I don't believe I shared this before. Also going to refrain from sharing the more graphic one because I'm hoping to keep this blog teen+. The introduction of GPT 2.0 saw a recreation of this prompt yet again. (Is it any wonder why I have so many images I'm running out of storage space!) She was the starting part for my challenge entry. After trying out the prompt with some upgrades (left), I quickly realized the hydra needed to be the focus for this challenge(right). After all, the hydra is the Legendary Creature, the sorceress is secondary. Finally, knowing the direction I wanted and realizing the format needed to be changed back to landscape, I ran two more generations. One produced an eight headed hydra and the other the nine headed hydra I used in the challenge. Lately, I have been feeling challenge results are a lot more of a lottery, so I was very happy to place ninth and found it fitting for nine headed creature. I hope at some point challenge results and voting can be improved, but that hope is dim. As is typical, I saw several placements in the top 20 that just didn't make sense to me, while several well done on theme entries that caught my eye in voting didn't even make the top 20. Despite the frustrations challenges can bring, they are fun. And often times, they invite me to push my creativity and create images I never would have pursued if not for the theme. If you haven't entered a challenge yet, give it a try! I would love to see more of this community participating in challenges and the social feed! Last, if you landed here, please take the time to clap this blog (up to 20 claps allowed per user). I appreciate you taking the time to view my blog!

I thought so too! Totally not my style but man GPT knocked it out of the park with that one which is why I included it here.

You did well to include it, I liked seeing it - as long as I don't see it in my sleep...
