The Case of the Missing Inventor

https://budgetpixel.com/p/64276 An inventor disappears. His daughter is concerned and hires her friend Alicia who happens to be a wonderful detective. Alicia studies the inventor's workroom, the half-made robot with a clockwork heart, and the tools left behind. Quiet clues like breadcrumbs that might find a lost father. So I asked: "What do you think happened to the inventor? Where did he go? Is he coming back?" A couple of people answered. ( @crabmouse suggested "The inventor put their heart and mind in the robot!") The inventor poured both their heart and mind into his newest invention, shaping brass and gears with tenderness as much as precision. He lovingly polished the wood for the body, making it smooth. He loved metal but wood had a warmth that metal didn't quite match. He carefully placed each piece within the body. Each cog carried a thought, each wire a memory, until the robot’s clockwork heart pulsed with the rhythm of its maker’s devotion. It was not merely built—it was loved and imagined into being. The inventor had a woodcarver friend who carved the pieces. Later that day, the woodcarver was to drop off the bottom half with the final legs and feet. Soon his robot would be done. ( @TTRPG_Player suggested the inventor was most likely kidnaped to create some device for an evil person. Maybe they brought him through a portal to an alternative world) The wall cracked open like a clock striking midnight, gears shrieking as stone gave way to shadow. From the breach stepped a demon carved from the ruins of another world, his eyes burning with cold fire. Every movement shed fragments of his own body, as if he were disintegrating even as he advanced. He reached for the inventor—not out of rage, but desperation. Long before the demon ever stepped through a portal, his realm whispered an old prophecy: “When the Queen’s stone begins to fall, seek the maker who gives hearts to metal.” No one knew what it meant—until the Queen’s body began to crumble. Her stone skin shed dust with every breath, her joints cracked, and her once‑resonant voice grew thin. The demon, her devoted husband, searched desperately for a cure. That’s when he found the stolen blueprints. Years earlier, a scholar from their realm had slipped through a small, unstable portal and returned with stolen fragments of an impossible design: sketches of a clockwork heart, diagrams of metal bodies that could hold memory, and notes written in a hand none of their people recognized. The scholar died before explaining how he obtained them, but the demon kept the pages. When his wife began to fail, he realized the truth—the prophecy wasn’t metaphor. It was literal. Someone in another world had already built the miracle he needed. The inventor. Not a king, not a sorcerer—just a gentle angora goat whose creations defied decay. The demon set the queendom's scholars and magicians to find the inventor and create a portal directly to his wife's salvation. The portal is fragile and shortlived. The demon has no time to explain. He snatches the inventor, bringing him back to his queen. He's always been the type to do first, explain later and this was no different. The portal closes leaving behind an empty room and a half-finished robot. (and now we are back to me and the start of the story) Later at tea the same day, Georgina, the inventor's daughter has invited her friend Alicia, a well-known detective, to her parlor. Georgina set her cup down and tried to steady her voice. “I know he’s missing, Alicia. Every day I bring him lunch because he forgets to eat when he’s working. It’s our little routine—noon, without fail. But today his workshop was silent. The wooden legs and lower torso he’s been waiting on were delivered, sitting right there on the bench, and he would never leave while a project was unfinished. Not if the parts he needed are right there. Everything was in its place… except him. That’s how I know something’s wrong. I don't know where he can be. Can you find him?” So what do you think happens next?
