The Blood of Golden Warrior
By alibasztt
The Blood of the Golden Eagle Before the grass turned red, Astraea was known only as the shield-bearer of the Falcon Guard, an ancient order sworn to protect the high mountain pass of Oakhaven. Raised under the shadow of the frost-peaked ranges, Astraea was taught to value honour above life and loyalty above all else. Inheriting her father’s ornate bronze shield—embellished with the emblem of a golden eagle in mid-flight—she was tasked with defending the crest that separated her agrarian homeland from the fierce conquerors of the eastern steppes. The morning of the decisive battle began under an ominous, grey-tinted sky. Whispers of a massive invading horde had reached the high guard days prior, but nothing could have prepared the defenders for the sheer size of the army surging across the plains. As war horns echoed off the distant snow-capped mountains, Astraea stood shoulder-to-shoulder with her battalion. Among them was her brother, the commander of the vanguard, whose rallying cries breathed courage into every warrior's heart. When the clash came, it was merciless. Steel shattered against bronze, and spear shafts snapped like dry twigs under the sheer weight of the onslaught. For hours, Astraea fought with unrelenting precision, her spear biting deep into enemy ranks while her shield deflected volley after volley of iron-tipped arrows. Yet, the tide of war shifted cruelly. One by one, the fallen covered the earth. Her comrades, the brave men and women who had sworn the same oath, collapsed into the dust until the din of conflict slowly bled into a harrowing, heavy silence. Surrounded by the fallen remains of both ally and foe, Astraea sank to one knee, blood trickling down her brow and arms from a dozen minor cuts. Her red cloak, ragged and torn at the hem, billowed wildly in the harsh alpine wind. Her leather and mail armor was battered, but her grip on the ash-wood shaft of her spear never loosened. Looking across the field, her eyes fell upon her brother’s body near the center of the fray, his standard trampled into the soil. A cold, fierce fire ignited within her chest. The conquerors believed the valley was theirs, assuming no one was left to hold the ridge. But as sunbeams finally broke through the bruised, storm-heavy clouds—casting rays of bright golden light upon the bloodstained field—Astraea gritted her teeth and rose from the dust. Her intense gaze locked onto the remaining enemy warlord atop the hill. She let out a battle cry that echoed against the craggy mountains, carrying the weight of every fallen warrior behind her. Astraea was no longer just a guard defending a pass; she was the last stand of her people. Holding her father's eagle shield firmly before her and raising her spear, she prepared to face the final wave alone.
