I Went to McDonald’s for a Burger… And Somehow Became Part of a Criminal Investigation

By ujjk

I had one very simple plan for Friday evening. Go to McDonald’s. Order a burger. Eat in peace. Go home. Nothing complicated. Nothing exciting. Just me, some fries, and the comforting knowledge that nobody expected anything from me. A perfect Friday, honestly. Or at least, it should have been. Because apparently, even ordering fast food is too much responsibility for me. It all started when I walked into McDonald’s around 7 PM. The restaurant was pretty busy. A few families. Some teenagers laughing at absolutely nothing. One exhausted employee who looked like he'd already experienced three lifetimes of disappointment. Normal McDonald’s atmosphere. I walked up to the self-service machine and ordered my usual. One cheeseburger. Medium fries. Six Chicken McNuggets. And a Coke. A healthy, balanced meal. According to absolutely nobody. I paid, grabbed my receipt, and waited. My order number was 47. Remember that number. It becomes important. After about five minutes, someone shouted: “ORDER 47!” Beautiful. Music to my ears. I walked to the counter, grabbed my tray, and found an empty table near the window. Everything was going perfectly. Which, looking back, should have been my first warning. I had just opened my burger when I heard a strange noise behind me. A loud crash. Followed by someone shouting: “NOT AGAIN!” Now, normally, when something happens in McDonald’s, I mind my own business. I've seen people argue over missing ketchup before. I know how dangerous this environment can become. But this sounded serious. I turned around. And there it was. A seagull. An actual seagull. Standing in the middle of McDonald’s. Looking completely comfortable. Like it had a reservation. For a moment, nobody moved. The bird looked around. We looked at the bird. One employee slowly put down a bag of fries. Then another employee whispered something that genuinely concerned me. “Oh no. It's Kevin.” Kevin? Excuse me? THE BIRD HAS A NAME? Before I could process this information, the seagull started walking toward the counter. Not flying. Walking. With confidence. Like a regional manager arriving for a surprise inspection. A woman nearby started laughing. A little kid pointed at the bird. And I was sitting there, holding my cheeseburger, wondering how this situation was going to end. Then the employee shouted: “EVERYONE, PLEASE KEEP YOUR FOOD CLOSE!” Interesting announcement. Not something you usually hear while eating a Big Mac. But fair enough. Apparently, Kevin had a reputation. According to the employees, this bird had been entering the restaurant for weeks. Stealing fries. Attacking abandoned trays. And generally behaving like a tiny criminal with wings. One employee claimed Kevin had once stolen an entire cheeseburger. An entire cheeseburger. Without paying. Meanwhile, I had just spent almost fifteen euros. I was beginning to question my financial decisions. But things were about to get worse. Much worse. Because Kevin suddenly noticed my table. More specifically… My fries. We made eye contact. I don't know how to explain it. But I immediately understood that this bird had bad intentions. I slowly moved my fries closer to me. Kevin took one step forward. I took one step backward. Kevin took another step. This was no longer dinner. This was a negotiation. And neither of us was willing to compromise. I looked around for help. Nobody. The employees were busy. The customers were watching. One teenager had already started recording. Fantastic. I was about to lose a fight against a bird in front of an audience. Then Kevin made his move. He jumped. I panicked. My Coke fell over. My chair made a horrible noise. And somehow, in the middle of all this chaos, Kevin grabbed a massive mouthful of fries. MY FRIES. I shouted something that probably wasn't appropriate for a family restaurant. Kevin flew across the room. Someone screamed. A child started laughing uncontrollably. And one employee yelled: “KEVIN! NO!” As if Kevin had ever respected authority. The bird landed near the entrance. Still holding my fries. Then something even more ridiculous happened. A man in his fifties stood up from his table. Very slowly. Very seriously. He pointed at Kevin. And said: “Not today, buddy.” I have never seen a man prepare for battle so confidently. He grabbed an empty McDonald’s paper bag. Approached the bird. And attempted what I can only describe as the least professional wildlife rescue operation in human history. Kevin was not impressed. The man moved left. Kevin moved right. The man moved right. Kevin jumped onto a chair. At this point, the entire restaurant was watching. Nobody was eating anymore. We were witnessing something much more important. A battle for justice. Eventually, the employee who first recognized Kevin approached with a single Chicken McNugget. She placed it near the door. A trap. Simple. Effective. Possibly genius. Kevin noticed it. He looked at the nugget. Then at the employee. Then back at the nugget. For a brief moment, I genuinely thought the plan might work. And it did. Sort of. Kevin walked toward the entrance. Grabbed the nugget. And just as the automatic doors opened… He escaped. With my fries. And a free nugget. THE CRIMINAL HAD BEEN REWARDED. The entire restaurant burst into laughter. Even the employees. Except me. I was staring at my half-empty fries container like a man who had just lost everything. Which, financially speaking, wasn't entirely incorrect. Then the manager walked over. “I'm really sorry about that.” I nodded. What was I supposed to say? That I wanted to file a police report? That Kevin owed me €3.50? That I wanted the security footage? Actually… I kind of did. But before I could say anything, the manager offered me fresh fries and a replacement drink. Free of charge. Finally. Some justice. A few minutes later, I was sitting at a different table. New fries. New Coke. No birds. Life was good again. The man who had attempted to capture Kevin came over to apologize. Apparently, he was a regular customer. And apparently, Kevin had been causing problems for months. “He's getting smarter,” the man said. I stared at him. What do you mean GETTING SMARTER? Are we dealing with a seagull or a supervillain? He continued. “Last week, he waited until someone opened the door, then ran straight to the counter.” Straight to the counter. No hesitation. No fear. Just crime. Honestly, at this point, Kevin had more confidence than I did. Eventually, things returned to normal. People started eating again. The employees cleaned up the mess. And I finally finished my burger. I thought the adventure was over. But then, just as I was preparing to leave, I noticed something outside the window. A familiar white bird. Standing on a parked car. Watching the restaurant. Kevin. He was back. And he wasn't alone. Next to him stood another seagull. Slightly smaller. Equally suspicious. I looked at Kevin. Then at the other bird. Then at the restaurant entrance. And suddenly, a terrible thought entered my mind. HE WAS RECRUITING. This wasn't a random theft. This was an organized operation. Kevin was building an empire. And McDonald’s was his headquarters. I stood up immediately. I had already lost one battle. I wasn't staying for the sequel. On my way out, I passed the employee who had warned everyone earlier. She smiled. “Have a nice evening!” I looked toward the parking lot. Kevin was still there. Waiting. “Thanks,” I said. “And good luck with Kevin.” She sighed. “Yeah. We're going to need it.” When I finally got home, I checked my phone. The teenager who had recorded the entire incident had apparently uploaded a video. Someone had shared it in a local community group. The caption? “MAN GETS ROBBED BY SEAGULL AT MCDONALD’S.” Amazing. Not "Brave customer survives unexpected wildlife encounter." Not "Local hero attempts to defend his dinner." No. Man gets robbed by seagull. And the worst part? The video had hundreds of likes. People were commenting things like: “Kevin strikes again.” “Bro lost a 1v1 against a bird.” “Give Kevin employee of the month.” I closed my phone. I had experienced enough humiliation for one evening. But honestly? After thinking about it for a while, I couldn't even be angry. Because sometimes, life gives you the strangest stories when you least expect them. You go somewhere for a simple meal. You expect a burger. Maybe some fries. A peaceful evening. And instead, you become the victim of a highly experienced feathered criminal. Would I go back to that McDonald’s? Absolutely. Would I sit near the entrance again? Never. Would I fight Kevin for my fries a second time? Probably. But next time, I'm bringing backup. Because somewhere out there, a seagull named Kevin is planning his next robbery. And if he's reading this… Kevin. We both know what happened. You may have won the battle. But this isn't over. I'm getting my fries back. Anyway. I'm ordering delivery next time. Unless Kevin learns how to ride a bicycle.
