Eternal Garden at the Edge of Time
By jmn
Within a secret garden hidden on an asteroid drifting at the many edges of Time, we see a Clockwork Sorcerer tending to his ferrobotanicals thoughtfully... "A fraction too soon..." The blossom slows beneath a steady hand until each brass petal turns in quiet accord with the others. No force. No insistence. The mechanism had merely wandered from its own rhythm. "Better." One learns that there is little value in perfection if it cannot change. Crystal vines climb by measured increments, each link deciding where the next should rest. Brass flowers unfold into new geometries whenever they discover a more elegant arrangement. Stone arches shift almost imperceptibly, settling into balances that did not exist the day before. Nothing here grows; everything here becomes. A cracked bearing mends until no seam remains. An unstable bloom is held together by unseen structure while it quietly rebuilds itself from within. A section of polished stone rises by the breadth of a finger, enough to let a creeping mechanism find an easier path. Small adjustments. They are often sufficient. The multiverse promises nothing. It scatters stars, worlds, and lives with admirable indifference. Even so, patterns emerge. One finds that rather remarkable. A brass orchid has assembled an extra petal since yesterday. Entirely unnecessary. Entirely harmless. It remains. Not every deviation is disorder. Not every symmetry is beautiful. Clockwork caretakers in all manner of shapes and sizes wander between silver stems and crystal branches, polishing dulled surfaces, replacing worn gears, collecting fragments that have simply reached the end of their purpose. A steward need only notice where attention is warranted and where it is not. To interfere beyond that is vanity disguised as diligence. Beyond the terrace, great gears turn with unwavering purpose. Before them, the uncertain futures of countless worlds unfold without asking permission from anyone. Both continue as they should. A mirrored bloom opens nearby, reflecting a hundred possible tomorrows across its polished petals. There is no need to hurry them. Time is no object. Here are some of the alts that I thought turned out ok:
