Simple hand-drawn line sketch of five floating jellyfish — AI art by @CaylaCatz

Inktober 2026 Day 5 : Smack (a group of jellyfish is called a smack. I just learned this today because I asked meta for some other definitions of "smack" besides hitting someone) 1. My original drawing. Yeah, I know it's pretty hilarious. I just looked at a jellyfish and thought how am I supposed to draw this with a pen and threw up my hands. It is what it is. So I'd thought i'd see if the AI could guess it was a smack of jellyfish. There was a couple of hints in the prompt that it was underwater to get the undersea painting look I wanted. Surprisingly these models did well. Even P-image guessed it. And actually in another prompt that had no clue to underwater and just said "dutch golden age oil painting", the models still guessed the jellyfish. My image-to-image prompt: make a vibrant vivid colorful hyperrealistic oil painting **of what you think this is**, full contrast from white to ceruleans and ultramarines, wide color spectrum, intricate detail, oil glazing technique, luminous transparent layers, hyperrealism, subsurface scattering, volumetric god rays through blue water 1. original drawing 2. P-image -- 10 credits. I just wanted to see how well the cheapest model did and it did well. 3. Muse 4. Grok 5. SeeDream 5 Flash 6. GPT 2.5 Sunburst It just goes to show, you don't have to be good at drawing for the AI to create an image from it -- you just have to be able to convey an idea and stick figures work, lol. October is Inktober month where people are challenged to do one ink drawing a day. You can find the list of this year's prompt on the Inktober site. Great images. I find it interesting that in English it's called a "jellyfish," even though it's neither a fish nor jelly. Do you know what we call it in Spanish? *Medusa*—like the mythological figure; I suppose all those tentacles are reminiscent of snakes.

I didn't know they were called a smack!

Google says the reason is "A group of jellyfish is called a "smack" because their painful, stinging tentacles feel like a sharp slap or blow when you touch them". Interestingly tho Scientific Terms: Scientists typically prefer terms like a bloom (for a large seasonal population) or a swarm (for a general gathering) rather than "smack".

It is intelligence after all. I would have gone for jellyfish as well. Now, if you had drawn one more line (or three) under each of them, things could be different. :-)

I've gotta say: Your simple jellyfish drawing is quite effective--and, yes, the final results are gorgeous.

me neither! interesting that they are named after a sound [like hitting the deck of a boat?😂]

Fabulous, amazing results. Fascinating term. Once was stun by a jellyfish when surfing - most unpleasant

laughing. what would you have thought if there were more lines under htem?

thank you! I was surprised the AI guessed it right
