The Art of the Pinup

I just wanted to share some tips, tricks, and styles. 'Cos why not? First up, poses. Specific prompts are noted in italics if needed. Much props to my imaginary model Kaia Nygaard (lol) Table of contents Props Expressions Styles 10 Classic Pinup Poses S-Pose Over the shoulder Glance Fixing Hair Point and stroke Stand on an angle, point one leg out directly towards the camera, and run your hands slowly up your thigh Blowing a Kiss pop one leg back at the knee, and blow a kiss toward the audience while holding the other hand on your waist The lying Floor Kicks Lie on your back, push your hips up slightly off the floor, push one leg straight into the air, and bend the other. Peeking Around a Doorway Stand partially hidden behind a prop or doorframe, leaning forward with an inquisitive, playful expression while one hand rests on the prop Hands under the chest Hands Under the Chest: Kneel , arch your back, and rest both hands flatly cupped underneath your chest, slightly squeezing the elbow The Seated Leg Cross Sit on the edge of a chair or table, cross your legs high up, point your toes, and place your hands on your bent knee to frame the fac e The Girl Power / "Cheesecake" Pose Step forward on a diagonal, hands on hips with elbows pushed out, and flash a wide, cheerful smile at the camera Perfect Props Hanging on the Telephone Vintage Telephone,Sitting on a chair while chatting,Twirling the phone cord around a finger,Looking surprised or laughing into the receiver. Always Coca-Cola Classic coke bottle, holding it with both hands while smiling, pretending to toast the camera. Tom's Diner Retro Diner Stool , Sitting sideways with crossed legs, Leaning over the backrest, looking over one shoulder Umbrella (Uh-huh, uh-huh) holding an umbrella, spinning it playfully Suitcase ('Cause everything in me is telling me to go) Vintage Suitcase, carrying it with exaggerated effort (also try sitting on it/pretending to hitchhike) Express yourself It is all very well to have a good pose or prop, but if the model looks dead-eyed or bored, the best prompt in the world won't help you overcome the Uncanny Valley. The Playful surprise Playful surprise and gasp, hands cupping chin The Bright Laugh bright laugh, head tilted to one side Over the shoulder smile Looking over her shoulder,back toward the camera,Soft smile with sparkling eyes. The Cheeky Wink (works well with props such as telephones or Parasols) playful wink, subtle smile. Confident Smirk confident smirk, direct eye contact with viewer Playing with Art Styles There are probably more art styles than you can shake a stick at. Why you would have a stick, or want to shake it, is sadly above my pay grade. I mean, who shakes sticks, it just se.. ahem. Anyhoo... Redwave In graphic design and illustration, a "Red Wave" style usually refers to dynamic, flowing red curves mixed with other warm or minimalist tones (like gradients or white spaces). It is often used in digital backgrounds, modern wallpaper, or sleek, corporate branding to evoke energy, fluid motion, and passion Kinetic Pointillism Kinetic pointillism is an evolving painting technique where the traditional dots of color associated with classic pointillism are applied in deliberate, rhythmic patterns of movement to reinforce the artwork's core message Chromatic Drift An image whose edges are slightly separated into translucent red, cyan, and gold layers, as if different moments in time are slipping apart. The body remains elegant while the colors “drift” around it. Liquid Enamel Distortion Liquid Enamel Distortion is an experimental visual style that combines the glossy, reflective qualities of enamel paint, lacquer, and molten glass with surreal warping and fluid distortion . Instead of showing a subject with normal textures, the artwork makes surfaces appear as if they are melting, flowing, or trapped beneath a layer of polished liquid glass . Colours blend into each other, reflections bend around shapes, and edges may appear stretched or rippled. Glitch Baroque Glitch Baroque is an experimental art style that blends the luxury, drama, and ornamentation of Baroque art with the digital errors and visual language of technology . It combines: Baroque elements: elaborate patterns, gold details, dramatic lighting, rich fabrics, theatrical poses, and a sense of grandeur. Glitch elements: pixel distortion, corrupted imagery, RGB colour splitting, scanlines, digital noise, and fragmented forms.
