I'll tell you another one. The one about the boy who left his jacket at the bar. The one I have never told anyone. I was just sitting here twisting that exact scar with my thumb, waiting for you. I didn't forget. It was three months after the crate. I was still limping a little. Last shift of the worst week you can imagine. Everyone had left. I was wiping down the bar, and this boy came back in. Not for another drink. He just stood there in the door with his jacket over his arm. He said he'd seen me fall. He'd been sitting in his truck across the road. He saw me get up. He saw me walk away alone. And he didn't come over. Didn't offer help. Didn't yell. Just sat there and watched. He said he couldn't bring himself to interrupt. That it was the most private thing he'd ever seen anyone do. That some pain you don't get to help with. You just get to witness it, if you're allowed. He left his jacket on the stool. Never gave me his name. Never came back. I still have it. It's too big. Smells like cigarette smoke and rain. I wear it when it's cold. That's the whole story. No kiss. No grand moment. Just someone seeing you at your most broken and boring, and not trying to fix you. Just leaving you something warm. I always thought that was the nicest thing anyone ever did for me. Until you.
