A short story inspired by the Parallel life Challenge . My artwork submission: https://budgetpixel.com/p/61607 The spring breeze carried drifting cherry blossoms across the school courtyard as eighteen-year-old Lin Xinyi hurried towards the classroom with a stack of textbooks in her arms. She had always been one of the brightest students in school. Teachers expected her to graduate with top results, classmates often sought her help before examinations, and more than once she had been unofficially voted the school belle. Beauty and brains rarely came together so effortlessly, and to many people, Lin Xinyi seemed destined for a perfect future. Life seemed to be unfolding exactly as it should. Then there was Li Junhao . Everyone knew him. Handsome, athletic, charismatic, and born into one of the wealthiest families in the city, he was the boy every girl secretly admired. He carried himself with effortless confidence that bordered on arrogance. He was used to getting what he wanted, and rarely accepted rejection well. At the time, Junhao was dating Xinyi's best friend, Chen Yuting . The two girls had been inseparable since secondary school, sharing everything from lunch breaks to dreams about the future. It was Yuting who first introduced Junhao to Xinyi. After that meeting, something changed. Junhao began messaging Xinyi more frequently. At first it was harmless—asking about homework, teasing jokes, or inviting both girls out together. Gradually, however, his attention shifted. The messages became directed only at Xinyi. Whenever the three of them met, his eyes lingered on her a little longer than they should. Yuting noticed. Arguments between the couple became more frequent, and before long they broke up. A week later, Junhao asked Xinyi to meet him after school. "I broke up with Yuting because I couldn't stop thinking about you," he confessed. "The moment I met you, I knew you were the one I wanted." Xinyi was stunned. She knew accepting him would hurt Yuting. She also knew nearly every girl in school wished they were in her place. In the end, her heart won. She accepted his confession. When Yuting found out, she confronted Xinyi outside the school gates. "You knew he was my boyfriend." "He wasn't when we got together," Xinyi replied quietly. "You two had already broken up. If you weren't meant to be together, how is that my fault?" Yuting stared at her for a long time, disappointment replacing anger. "I thought you were my best friend." Without another word, she turned and walked away. That was the last day they spoke for years. Being with Junhao felt like standing at the very top of the world. He adored her, showering her with affection and expensive gifts despite still being students. Her grades slipped slightly as she devoted more time to their relationship, but she hardly cared. She was still among the better-performing students, and besides, everyone envied her. Junhao could be arrogant and surprisingly petty. If things didn't go his way, he would sulk until someone gave in. He disliked being contradicted and expected Xinyi to accommodate him more often than not. Fortunately, he treated her exceptionally well. As long as she let him have his way over small matters, he made her feel like the most cherished woman in the world. To eighteen-year-old Xinyi, that was enough. After graduating from high school, Xinyi received offers from several excellent universities. She had originally hoped to study at a university renowned for its computer science programme in another city. However, Junhao hoped they could stay together instead of beginning a long-distance relationship. With his family's help, Xinyi was admitted to the same university as him. She told herself that as long as they were together, the choice of university hardly mattered. They spent the next four years building their future side by side. Two years after graduating from university, they married. Junhao inherited his father's business exactly as everyone expected. Their wedding became one of the most talked-about events among former classmates. Soon afterward, Xinyi moved into a luxurious home where every comfort was readily available. She never needed to work. The house was staffed with attentive servants and chauffeurs who handled nearly every daily task. Her days were filled with shopping trips, overseas holidays, afternoon teas with other socialites, charity galas, and elegant dinners. It felt as though she had stepped into the fairytale life she had once only dreamed about. Whenever classmates met them years later, they whispered with admiration. "She's so lucky." "She married the perfect man." "They're living the dream." Xinyi believed them. Sometimes she heard news about Yuting through old classmates. Yuting had eventually married an ordinary office worker and seemed genuinely happy. Xinyi smiled whenever she heard those updates. She was sincerely glad her former friend had found happiness, though somewhere deep inside, she couldn't help wondering if Yuting still resented her for ending up with the man every girl wanted. After all, from where Xinyi stood, she had the best life among everyone they knew. Years passed. Their daughter, Li Anya , was born into privilege. She grew up surrounded by expensive toys, prestigious schools, and family vacations overseas. Xinyi loved her deeply, yet much of the day-to-day parenting naturally fell to their helper while Junhao buried himself in work expanding the company. She occasionally felt lonely. Junhao worked late more often now, missing dinners and anniversaries. Whenever she complained, he would smile, hold her hand, and promise it was all for their future. She believed him. Until she couldn't anymore. (To be continued in Part 2.)
