Some Characters from my forthcoming Fantasy Novel *The Hidden Realm* Lieutenant Matthew Ashcombe, 28, is a Royal Navy officer serving aboard HMS *Royal Sovereign*. Quietly confident, observant, practical, and possessed of a restrained sense of humour, Arthur has a particular talent for navigation, charts, and pilotage, trusting careful observation and his compass more readily than superstition. His naval career has exposed him to distant places and different cultures, leaving him somewhat more open-minded than his reserved Victorian manner initially suggests. He is deeply devoted to his elder sister, Melanie, although she remains entirely unimpressed by his naval dignity. While home on leave in Plymouth in 1895, Arthur sets out for a walking excursion across Dartmoor and somehow penetrates the ancient Veil concealing an entire Elven civilization. There he meets Elowen, and his determination to understand the impossible—and protect the woman he comes to love—places him at the centre of the first true contact between Humans and Elves in centuries.
