The blast nicked the toe of her handstitched cowgirl boot — a thin, glowing scar creased the leather, snipping a few silver threads. “Hey!” she yelled, voice sharp as stilettos. “Those are my favorite boots!” With a snarl, she fired. The bullet streaked silver through the hazy light, straight into the gargantuan pupil. Splat! The Beholder shuddered once, then folded in on itself like bad geometry. One dead bounty. As smoke curled from her gun's barrel, she said, “No one messes with my boots.” Moral of the story: Shoot the gunslinger, not her boots. You'll survive longer.
