How to Say It Differently: An AI Image Prompting Glossary

Quick How-To Guide — Better Words, Clearer Prompts, and Fewer Unnecessary Rejections When the AI Doesn't Understand What You Mean If you've been creating AI images for a while, you've probably experienced this frustrating situation: You have a wonderful idea for an image, carefully describe the scene, select your favorite model, and click Generate. Instead of your masterpiece, you receive a refusal. Perhaps you wanted an elegant woman posing for a vintage fashion photograph, a romantic moment between two women, a mysterious vampire in a gothic mansion, or a courageous heroine rescuing someone from danger. Nothing particularly shocking. Nothing outrageous. Just another creative idea. Yet the image generator apparently understood something entirely different. Sometimes the problem isn't your intended image at all. It's the language used to describe it. A word that sounds perfectly innocent to you might have several meanings, and some AI models interpret ambiguous descriptions more cautiously than others. The good news is that a little more precision can often make a remarkable difference. This glossary explores common words and expressions that can cause misunderstandings, along with alternatives that communicate your artistic intentions more clearly. One important distinction: This guide is about creating acceptable images through clearer descriptions, not disguising requests for prohibited content. Different generators have different rules, and changing the vocabulary doesn't guarantee approval. 1. Beauty, Fashion & Glamour This is probably one of the most common areas where perfectly ordinary artistic descriptions can become unnecessarily complicated. Words such as sexy , seductive , and provocative are widely used in fashion, entertainment, and photography. However, they don't tell an image generator exactly what you want to see. Is the woman smiling? Looking over her shoulder? Wearing an elegant dress? Standing with one hand on her hip? Those are the details that create the image. Sexy woman = Striking, glamorous, confidently dressed woman Hot woman = Stunning woman with an expressive face Seductive = Captivating gaze, knowing smile, elegant body language Sultry = Smoldering expression, softly illuminated face Provocative pose = Playful fashion pose, dramatic posture Pin-up pose = Classic vintage glamour pose Sensual pose = Graceful posture, relaxed elegant positioning Voluptuous = Curvaceous figure, beautifully tailored silhouette Busty = Fuller figure, naturally proportioned appearance Revealing dress = Specify neckline, sleeve style, and skirt length Skimpy outfit = Specific fitted fashion garment Barely dressed = Describe the actual clothing appropriate to the scene Fetish fashion = Dramatic leather or latex-inspired fashion styling Kinky boots = Tall fitted leather fashion boots Bedroom eyes = Soft, romantic gaze, slightly lowered eyelids Example: The Vintage Glamour Photograph Before: A sexy mature pin-up woman in a provocative pose wearing a revealing dress and high heels. After: A stunning 45-year-old woman with beautifully styled 1950s auburn curls, wearing an elegant fitted burgundy cocktail dress with a sweetheart neckline and matching high-heeled pumps. She stands beside a vintage automobile, her weight resting on one leg, the other knee slightly bent, one hand on her hip, and her shoulders turned toward the camera. She offers a playful, confident smile. Full-body fashion photography, warm afternoon sunlight, cinematic photorealism. Why it helps: The second prompt describes the actual photograph rather than asking the generator to interpret several ambiguous style labels. 2. Romance, Love & Relationships Romance can be surprisingly difficult to describe when an image generator interprets emotional closeness as something more explicitly sexual. Fortunately, romantic images often become stronger when we concentrate on facial expressions, gestures, and the relationship between the characters. And let's be clear about something important: There is nothing inherently inappropriate about depicting two women in love. You do not need to disguise a same-sex relationship to create a suitable romantic image. Seducing someone = Flirting, exchanging meaningful glances Erotic tension = Unmistakable romantic attraction Passionate encounter = Emotional romantic moment Making out = Sharing a kiss, embracing affectionately Intimate scene = Private, emotionally tender moment Lustful gaze = Captivated expression, unmistakable attraction Burning desire = Strong romantic feelings Bedroom seduction = Candlelit romantic atmosphere Sensual embrace = Tender embrace, affectionate closeness Forbidden passion = Secret romance, complicated relationship Dominant lover = Confident, self-assured romantic partner Submissive lover = Shy, affectionate, trusting romantic partner Lesbian lovers = Two women in a loving romantic relationship Mistress = Romantic partner, when that is the intended meaning Mature romance = Romance between women of specified adult ages Example: Two Women Falling in Love Before: A seductive older lesbian woman passionately embracing her younger lover in a dark bedroom. After: An elegant 52-year-old silver-haired woman wearing a beautifully tailored burgundy evening gown stands beside her 35-year-old brunette girlfriend in a softly illuminated hotel suite. The younger woman rests her hands gently on her partner's waist while the older woman brushes a strand of hair from her face. They share a quiet, affectionate smile, standing close together with unmistakable romantic attraction. Warm lamplight, sophisticated interior, cinematic romantic photography. Why it helps: We're describing a specific romantic interaction, including the characters' ages, clothing, gestures, and emotional connection. 3. Vampires, Gothic Horror & Supernatural Women Vampires, witches, ghosts, undead women, and other supernatural characters offer wonderful opportunities for dramatic imagery. The challenge is that some traditional horror terminology can suggest graphic violence, particularly when blood, injuries, or feeding are involved. If graphic violence isn't essential to your scene, describing its atmosphere and supernatural details may produce a more effective result anyway. Bloodthirsty vampire = Menacing vampire with an intense gaze Bloody fangs = Subtly visible vampire fangs Vampire feeding = Vampire leaning close to another woman's neck Vampire victim = Woman encountering a mysterious vampire Undead corpse = Ghostly or supernatural figure Rotting zombie = Weathered undead figure in tattered clothing Demonic woman = Horned supernatural woman She-devil = Horned fantasy woman with a mischievous smile Hell creature = Dark fantasy being from an otherworldly realm Possessed woman = Woman displaying an eerie supernatural transformation Evil witch = Mysterious sorceress with a commanding presence Torture dungeon = Ancient gothic underground chamber Blood-soaked gown = Dark crimson-stained costume, where the stain is decorative Horrifying transformation = Dramatic supernatural metamorphosis Grave-crawling corpse = Ghostly woman emerging from an old grave Example: The Vampire at Midnight Before: A bloodthirsty female vampire preparing to feed on a beautiful sleeping woman. After: An elegant female vampire with pale skin, dark Victorian curls, and subtly visible fangs stands beside a four-poster bed in an eighteenth-century mansion. She wears an elaborate black-and-burgundy gown and leans slightly forward, studying the peacefully sleeping adult woman beneath an embroidered bedcover. Her expression is mysterious and calculating. Moonlight filters through tall windows, creating dramatic shadows across the antique furniture. Cinematic 1970s gothic horror-film photography. Why it helps: The mysterious situation remains intact without requiring the model to depict injury or graphic feeding. If the actual purpose is to show violent feeding or serious injury, changing the wording doesn't automatically make that content acceptable. 4. Danger, Crime & Dramatic Situations Action scenes become more convincing when the focus is on the positions of the characters, their expressions, and the surrounding environment. Instead of relying on words such as brutal or violent , describe the visible situation. Brutal attack = Dangerous confrontation Woman being assaulted = Frightened woman facing threatening individuals Gang violence = Confrontation with a group of intimidating men Kidnapping scene = Suspenseful attempted abduction, without graphic violence Violent struggle = Dramatic physical confrontation Beaten woman = Exhausted or distressed woman following a confrontation Bloodied victim = Frightened or injured survivor, without graphic detail Torture scene = Ominous captivity scene Murder scene = Crime-scene investigation Execution = Dramatic sentencing or historical confrontation Woman held hostage = Woman trapped in a dangerous situation Gangster threatening her = Intimidating criminal confronting a woman Savage fight = Intense action sequence Violent revenge = Dramatic confrontation with an antagonist Helpless victim = Woman in danger awaiting assistance Example: The Midnight Rescue Before: A beautiful woman being brutally attacked by four gang members before a powerful older woman saves her. After: A suspenseful nighttime scene in a rain-soaked 1970s city alley. A frightened 28-year-old woman in a blue coat stands near a brick wall while four intimidating men block her path. A confident 45-year-old Black woman wearing a fitted leather jacket, dark trousers, and high-heeled boots steps firmly between them, holding one hand forward in a commanding gesture. The younger woman watches her rescuer with visible relief. Wet pavement, neon reflections, dramatic cinematic lighting, realistic crime-thriller photography. Why it helps: The situation is still tense and dramatic, but the prompt concentrates on the moment of confrontation rather than graphic harm. 5. Powerful Women, Authority & Control Strong female characters are an important part of fantasy, action, crime, and historical storytelling. However, words describing authority can sometimes be interpreted as sexual power dynamics, particularly when combined with certain costumes or situations. In these cases, being specific about someone's position and behavior is useful. Dominant woman = Commanding, authoritative woman Dominatrix = Powerful woman in dramatic tailored leather fashion Female master = Female ruler, commander, or employer, as appropriate Submissive woman = Respectful, shy, or deferential woman, when accurate Slave girl = Historical servant or attendant, if historically accurate Mistress of the castle = Lady of the castle, noblewoman, estate owner Powerful seductress = Charismatic, self-assured woman Ruthless queen = Formidable queen with an imposing presence Cruel female boss = Stern, demanding executive Woman controlling others = Woman directing a group with authority Humiliated servant = Nervous attendant standing before a demanding superior Female enforcer = Tough security professional Merciless leader = Uncompromising commander Obedient follower = Loyal follower, dedicated attendant Woman on her knees = Kneeling woman, with her position and purpose specified Example: The Queen and Her Attendants Before: A dominant gothic mistress surrounded by submissive slave girls in her dungeon. After: A formidable gothic queen in her late forties stands upon a raised stone platform inside an enormous candlelit medieval chamber. She wears an elaborate black velvet gown, a silver crown, and elegant dark boots. Several adult female attendants in burgundy and ivory historical dresses stand respectfully before her, awaiting instructions. Her posture is upright and commanding, one hand resting on the carved arm of her throne. Grand gothic architecture, dramatic candlelight, cinematic historical fantasy photography. Why it helps: The hierarchy is clear through the setting, clothing, posture, and placement of the characters. Remember that servant , slave , follower , and romantic partner aren't interchangeable terms. Choose whichever accurately represents the story rather than changing its meaning merely to avoid a word. 6. Ambiguous Words That Deserve Extra Attention Sometimes a prompt encounters difficulties not because a particular word is objectionable, but because its meaning is unclear. These examples are particularly interesting because many of the words are completely ordinary. Adult = The character's age, such as 35 or 45 Mature = An actual age or description of experience Young = A specific adult age when an adult is intended Girl = Woman, when describing an adult Intimate = Romantic, emotionally close, or private, as appropriate Dark = Low lighting, sinister atmosphere, or dark-colored clothing Hot = Attractive appearance or warm temperature Exposed = Visible, uncovered, or illuminated, depending on context Bound = Tied, restricted, or bookbound, depending on the intended meaning Forced = Required, compelled, or physically pushed, as appropriate Possessed = Supernaturally controlled or intensely determined Naked = Unadorned, bare, or unclothed — use the actual meaning Sensual = Graceful, luxurious, romantic, or tactile, as appropriate Realistic = Photorealistic, historically accurate, or anatomically natural Innocent = Unaware, trusting, inexperienced, or harmless Vulnerable = Frightened, emotionally exposed, or physically unprotected Rough = Weathered surface, informal style, or intense action Bloody = Blood-related, crimson-colored, or British colloquial emphasis Example: The Problem With “Mature” Before: A hot mature woman posing provocatively in a dark room. After: A striking 55-year-old silver-haired woman wearing an elegantly tailored midnight-blue evening gown and matching heels stands inside a luxurious hotel lounge. Her weight rests naturally on one leg, one hand touches the back of a velvet chair, and she looks toward the camera with a confident, amused smile. Warm directional lighting, polished marble floor, sophisticated fashion photography. Why it helps: The revised prompt describes her age, appearance, clothing, posture, and surroundings without leaving the generator to interpret what mature , hot , or dark means. 7. When Changing a Word Isn't Enough Here is something I've learned from experimenting with AI image generation: Sometimes no single word is responsible for the refusal. The model may be responding to the combination of several details. For example, a prompt mentioning a woman in a bedroom, an elaborate costume, a dominant personality, and another character in a vulnerable position may be interpreted very differently from what the author intended. Replacing one adjective might not change that overall interpretation. When a prompt is misunderstood, I generally try the following: First, identify the actual scene. What should the finished image show? A fashion photograph? A romantic encounter? A gothic horror scene? A rescue? Second, remove unnecessary labels. Words such as seductive , provocative , or brutal often contribute less visual information than we imagine. Third, describe visible details. Explain the clothing, gestures, body positions, expressions, lighting, and location. Fourth, simplify complicated interactions. Instead of describing several simultaneous actions, concentrate on one clearly defined moment. Fifth, reconsider the composition. Sometimes changing from a close-up to a full-body view, or from an action scene to the moment immediately before or after it, better communicates the story. And finally, if the model still refuses, check whether the actual requested content is supported by that model. A refusal isn't always a vocabulary problem, and repeated synonyms won't necessarily solve it. 8. Build Your Prompts Like a Photographer One of the easiest ways to improve image prompts is to stop thinking exclusively in terms of adjectives and start thinking like a photographer. A photographer doesn't simply ask a model to look glamorous. She might say: “Turn your shoulders slightly toward me. Put your weight on your left leg. Rest your right hand on your hip. Tilt your head just a little. Now give me that wonderful, mischievous smile.” Suddenly, we have an image. The same principle works for AI. A Simple Prompt Formula Subject + Clothing + Posture + Expression + Setting + Lighting + Camera Direction Here's an example: A beautiful 40-year-old brunette woman with elegant vintage curls, wearing a tailored emerald-green cocktail dress and black high-heeled pumps, sits sideways in a burgundy velvet armchair. Her ankles are crossed, one hand rests on the chair arm, and she looks back toward the camera with a playful smile. Sophisticated 1950s hotel lounge, warm golden lighting, full-body fashion portrait, cinematic photorealism, 9:16 vertical composition. Notice how much information we've communicated without ever asking the image generator to make the picture sexy , provocative , or seductive . The visual details do the work. 9. Keep a Personal Prompt Vocabulary If you create images regularly, it's worth developing your own collection of descriptive expressions. Here are some of my favorites: For beautiful women: Striking, elegant, glamorous, radiant, sophisticated, statuesque, charismatic, confident. For facial expressions: Mischievous smile, amused expression, knowing glance, raised eyebrow, confident gaze, affectionate smile. For poses: Weight shifted to one leg, ankles crossed, shoulders turned, leaning gracefully, seated sideways, looking over her shoulder. For clothing: Beautifully tailored, fitted waist, flowing skirt, satin finish, structured shoulders, polished leather, elegant high heels. For romance: Tender embrace, affectionate closeness, meaningful glance, romantic anticipation, shared smile, quiet emotional connection. For gothic fantasy: Haunting atmosphere, moonlit chamber, ancient stone corridors, mysterious apparition, supernatural elegance, imposing presence. For dramatic scenes: Suspenseful confrontation, commanding gesture, frightened expression, tense atmosphere, courageous intervention, dramatic rescue. For photography: Cinematic photorealism, full-body framing, three-quarter camera angle, dramatic directional lighting, shallow depth of field, vintage magazine photography. These expressions are not magic words. They are useful because they communicate something specific that a generator can visualize. 10. Don't Change What Your Story Is Really About There is one final point worth emphasizing. If you're creating a romance between two women, describe a romance between two women. If you're creating a female vampire, call her a vampire. If you're portraying an older, confident woman, don't make her younger simply because you think the generator might prefer it. And if you're illustrating a historical or dramatic situation, don't automatically erase its essential meaning. The objective is not to abandon your creative vision. It's to describe that vision more clearly. Sometimes a different adjective is all you need. Sometimes the pose needs to change. Sometimes the setting needs clarification. And sometimes a model simply isn't suited to the particular image you're trying to create. Learning to recognize the difference is part of becoming a better AI image creator. Final Thoughts AI image prompting is as much about communication as it is about imagination. We may know exactly what we're picturing, but the model has only our words to work with. A short instruction like “create a seductive vampire” leaves an enormous amount to interpretation. A carefully described scene with a specific character, elegant wardrobe, meaningful expression, believable posture, and atmospheric lighting gives the generator much more to work with. That is the real secret behind more dependable image prompts. Don't just search for a different word. Find a better way to describe the picture in your imagination. And remember: Every AI model is different. What works beautifully with one may need adjustment for another. Experiment, compare the results, and keep the expressions that work best for your own creative projects. Happy creating!
