Emma & Alicia: The Storm That Changed Everything

The first time Emma Hart met Alicia Monroe, she was convinced she hated her. Not disliked. Not found intimidating. Hated. Which was unfortunate, because Alicia Monroe had just purchased the company Emma worked for. The announcement came on a Tuesday morning during what was supposed to be a routine staff meeting, and when the tall woman in the navy suit walked into the conference room flanked by lawyers and executives, every conversation stopped. Emma leaned toward her coworker. "Please tell me that's not the new owner." Her coworker looked. "Oh no." "Oh no?" "That's Alicia Monroe." Emma frowned. "Who's Alicia Monroe?" "The Alicia Monroe." Emma rolled her eyes. "That explains absolutely nothing." Alicia reached the front of the room and smiled. "Good morning, everyone." The smile was devastating. Not sweet. Not friendly. Dangerous. The kind of smile that made people forget what they had been thinking about. Emma immediately decided she was immune. Three months later she would remember that moment and laugh at herself. For now, however, she crossed her arms. "I don't trust people who look that confident." A voice beside her answered. "Neither do I." Emma nearly jumped. Alicia Monroe was standing directly behind her. She had somehow crossed the entire room without Emma noticing. The CEO raised one eyebrow. "And yet here we are." Over the next several weeks they clashed constantly. Emma challenged decisions. Alicia challenged Emma. Every meeting turned into a debate. Every debate turned into an argument. And every argument somehow ended with both women smiling. One evening they found themselves alone in the office during a thunderstorm. The elevators had stopped. The power flickered. Rain hammered against the windows forty floors above the city. Emma looked outside. "Great." "What?" "We're trapped." Alicia walked beside her. "Temporarily inconvenienced." "That's rich-people language for trapped." Alicia laughed. A real laugh. Not the polished executive version. Emma realized it was the first time she had heard it. The sound lingered. Far longer than it should have. Hours later they sat on the floor near the emergency lights sharing vending-machine snacks. "Tell me something nobody knows about you," Alicia said. Emma shook her head. "No." "Why?" "Because you'll use it against me." "I promise I won't." "I don't trust promises from billionaires." Alicia smiled. "Fair." A long silence followed. Then Alicia spoke quietly. "I was homeless when I was seventeen." Emma blinked. "What?" Alicia stared toward the rain. "For almost a year." Emma sat up. "No." "Yes." "You?" "Surprised?" "A little." "A lot?" "A lot." For the first time, Alicia looked vulnerable. And somehow that was far more powerful than confidence. The relationship changed after that night. Not quickly. Not obviously. But undeniably. Coffee appeared on Emma's desk. Alicia stayed late to help with projects she could have delegated. Text messages became phone calls. Phone calls became dinners. Dinners became something neither woman could define. Until one evening. A charity gala. Black-tie. Champagne. Music. Emma hated every second of it. Alicia looked magnificent. Which made things worse. "You keep staring at me." Emma nearly dropped her drink. "I absolutely do not." "You absolutely do." Emma looked away. Alicia stepped closer. "So what's the verdict?" "What verdict?" "After six months." Emma swallowed. "You still drive me insane." Alicia smiled. "Good." "Good?" "Because you drive me insane too." For a moment neither moved. The ballroom disappeared. The orchestra disappeared. The crowd disappeared. There was only the space between them. And suddenly it felt very small. Very dangerous. Very impossible to ignore. Emma laughed nervously. "So what happens now?" Alicia's eyes softened. "Maybe we stop pretending." And for the first time, Emma kissed her. Not because it was perfect. Not because it was planned. But because waiting another second felt impossible. Three years later, standing beneath a wedding arch filled with white roses, Emma looked at the woman waiting for her. The powerful executive. The former homeless teenager. The woman who had once stranded her in a skyscraper during a storm. The woman who had changed everything. Alicia smiled. The same dangerous smile. Emma smiled back. The same helpless reaction. And as they took each other's hands, Emma whispered: "You know, I still think you're impossible." Alicia laughed. "And yet here you are." "Yeah." Emma squeezed her hand. "Right where I belong." Forever Begins Tonight (Emma & Alicia) A Story by Germaine Corbeau - Click here for links to all Germaine Corbeau Stories!
