Mon:Rwanda: The King and the Seven Sons The story of The King and the Seven Sons is a cornerstone of Rwandan (Banyarwanda) oral tradition, deeply intertwined with the royal history of the pre-colonial kingdom. It reflects a culture that highly values filial piety, the wisdom of the marginalized, and the sacred nature of the Virunga Mountains. In Rwandan cosmology, volcanoes are often seen as the dwelling places of powerful spirits or the source of life-giving water, and this tale serves as a moral foundation for the "Imigani" (proverbs/stories) that teach that true leadership comes from humility rather than birthright or physical stature. The narrative follows a great king who, after many years of childlessness, is gifted seven sons through a magical intervention. While the six older brothers are tall, strong, and boastful, the youngest is born small and is often ridiculed as a "runt." When a devastating drought strikes the kingdom, the older brothers fail to find a solution through force. It is the youngest son who, guided by a mysterious old woman, embarks on a perilous journey to the mist-shrouded Volcanoes of the Virunga. Through acts of kindness to forest creatures and his refusal to be intimidated by the mountain spirits, he discovers the "Heart of the Water," breaking the curse and saving the kingdom, ultimately proving that the smallest among them possessed the greatest spirit. ----------------------------------------------------- Fairytale/Folklore Image/Video/Song Challenge (March 20-26, 2026) https://budgetpixel.com/blog/fairytalefolklore-imagevideosong-challenge-march-20-26-2026

Very cool image. The story is interesting to me because it is a 7th son who is weaker but smarter and kinder and more willing to listen to advice which is also a theme in European fairytales. 7 seems to be a magic number. Google says it's a magic number in Asia too. Although Google says in South America, the 7th son is cursed -- becomes a werewolf or other dark beings. So they are named Benito (blessed) to break the curse at birth. I had no idea that the 7th son (or 7th daughter) was a worldwide thing. It is so interesting. Thank you for sharing this folktale. It was a fun read and I loved your image with the carved wood frame
