NORSE Mythology part5
By SouthamericanMyth
Your myth fella JC here, from Valhalla, to bring you a new episode of Norse Mythology EIR A divine or semi-divine figure known as a healer and knowledge of medicinal herbs, there is 3 variants or posible nature of her, one as a aesir goddess, wich had the divine power of healing all wounds and cure all illness, a second variant is she as a valkyrie, wich mostly are from divine or semi-divine nature, her particular role as a valkyrie was to decide witch warrior in the battlefield will survive and recover (that differs from the usual valkyrie role in battlefield), a third variant is her as a handmaiden of Frigg (Aesir goddess) as a part of lower deities who assisted Frigg. The nature of knowledge of herb and medicine is more connected to the Vanir, being her a possible Vanir, only thing for sure she was the most skillest in medicine in norse mythology. THRIVALDI A multihead jotunn, antagonist of Thor who victorously slained him, being one of the many giants on the list of Thor kills, apparently the fight between this two or Thor victory was a big achievement, Thor was later nicknamed "Killer of Thrivaldi", sadly there are not surviving text of this battle or Thrivaldi in more detail. DRAUGR Undead revenants who acted as malevolant guardians of burial mounds, similar to a zombie, they are reanimated corpses with supernatural strenght and size, to defeat them or prevent them requires a very specific instructions VALKYRIES Despite you probably have seen pictures or depictions of brave powerful female warriors in modern media, well doing research, in Norse mythology valkyries were different to the concep of divine female warrior that Richard Wagner made popular with his opera and "ride of the valkyries" composition. Valkyries were supernatural female beings who served to Odin, their main role was to pick the bravest and worth warriors slained on battlefield, and guide their souls to Odin's hall Valhalla, also half of those were guided to Freyja's death realm, Folkvangr, apparently in both cases for the same purpose, training great warriors for the Ragnarok. This link with Freyja also has lead theories if Freyja itself is a valkyrie or the role model for the valkyries. If you wonder where they come, often they are metioned as daughters of Odin with Frigg, in some particular cases daughter of Thor with Sif, being there them divine beings, but in later sagas and poems, some were mortal or semi-divine (daughters of a mortal king or heroe and a divine being). Usually they were presented and mentioned as a collective group, but as individuals there some that has their own adventures/stories, being Brynhildr/Brunhild one of the most notable, but ill save her for another chapter. HILDR A valkyrie that has the particullary atribute of reviving warriors from the battlefield, wich is the opposite main role of the valkyries. In a pair of germanic sagas/poems, she is the daughter of a legendary king, and was kidnapped by another prince, and apparently marry with her, that lead to a battle between that prince and Hildr's father, every night she went to the battlefield and did a spell wich resurrected all the warriors slain in the battlefield, making it endless until ragnarok HEL / HELA Daughter of Loki and Angrboda, sister to Fenrir and Jörmundgandr, she is the ruler of the dead and gave the name to the world in wich dead souls dwells, Helheim. Odin gave her the task to oversee those who die of sickness or old age. In Norse mythology and viking ideal, dying of sickness or old was not desireble because that will not able to access to valhalla in afterlife, despite that Helheim wasnt neccesary miserable, the souls of the Aesir gods Baldr and his wife Nanna where living there apparently happy. In that realm there was also an army of dead who Loki will command during valhalla, also in that realm no one could leave, or at least the dead one, Hel will not allow to leave, although she is feared by gods, she maintain generally neutral. I hope you enjoy it, thats for now End.
