Welcome back to the most magical place of BP's blogs, the fairy catalog ! now in its 4th edition, in this time i will focus not on races or type of fae, i will focus on individuals fae, distinguished fae! Let's start! Oberon Origin: European medieval folklore Myth/Folklore: Oberon is the king of the faeries, spouse of Titania the queen of faeries, he was present on medieval folklore, notably french literature, with origins of celtic elements, welsh, irish, and germanic similar characters (example Alberich, a dwarf king of germanic mythology), but most famous for being a central role in Shakespeare work " A Midsummer Night's Dream" Characteristics: His physical description vary, olders tradition depicted as a dwarf size man (possibly coined from the germanic Alberich), other version depicts him as a elven being of human size or even taller, all versions coincide in depict him of a supernatural beauty. As fairy king he had a big magical dominion and powers, those powers include; induce sleep, dominion over dreams, ilusions, control of weather and fertility of the forest, also be a ageless and immortal. His nature towards humans its fair but severe and careless, his immortality and life in the fae kingdom realm makes him indifferent to mortals sensibilities, logic and morals. Titania Origin: Brittish folklore Myth/Folklore: Queen of the faeries, spouse of Oberon, her name not mention in previous myth and folk traditions, its coined William Shakespeare himself, in his work A Midsummer Night's Dream, Shakespeare inspired Titania by Ovid's work "Metamorphosis" in wich titania was the appellative given to a daughter of some Titan. Although she is a literature character, as a queen of faeries shares elements of others celtic and irish mythology goddess and fairies. As the wife of Oberon, both are conceiled as eternal lovers and also adversaries. Characteristics: Described with a ethereal beauty, often depicted as human size. Similar to Oberon, as a queen of fairies had power and dominion on the fairie realm, magic, ilusions, enchantments, specially in Shakespeare work, her dispute with Oberon has caused abrupt changes on the weather and damaged the harvest. In literature is mostly of benevolent nature. Puck / Robin Goodfellow Origin: British and celtic folklore Myth/Folklore: a trickster small fae spirit, unpredictable and capricious, in early folk traditions, a puck or pook was a more demon-like creature, later evolved to a more benevolent nature spirit, but always mischievous, also had the tradition of the medieval interpretation of the greek god Pan, having the elements of living in the wild nature and representing those aspect of nature; wild, free, unpredictable and sometimes dangerous. Ah and again, he is a central role in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream in wich he serves to Oberon. Characteristics: he is depicted as a small humanoid supernatural creature. He has magic abilities and a high or good level of magic use, being succesful on trick Titania and accomplish Oberon orders, notably in the previously Shakespeare's work, he changed Nick Bottom's head into a donkey head. Puck is benevolent and goodwilling, althought his tricks and jokes cause havoc to humans. Melusine Origin: French folklore Myth/Folklore: a woman descendant of a human king and a fairy who was cursed to be a water-spirit with a half-snake or mermaid form. Her myth involves tabues, love and keep promises, the supernatural origin and start of dinasty geneology. In resume, she marry a nobleman/knight, with the promise of never see her at saturdays, the marriage goes well they got children and due fae nature of Melusine they achieve good weatlh and fortune, then later his husband broke the promise and discover her serpent-dragon form, wich she decide to leave him, in most version the husband's good luck stop, the children ends very good at high noble life or starting kingdoms, two importants motif across a lot of mythologies; the supernatural origin or descendant of a kings/dinasty lineage, and the fairy paradigm in wich a heroe/knight entablish/marry a supernatural being like a fairy, spirit or nymph, with the duty of keep a promise that is usually broke. Characteristics: She is half human and half serpent from the lower body (sometimes winged, sometimes with fishtail, or half dragon) but only on saturdays, the other days of the weeks she looks like a normal human Queen Mab Origin: English folklore Myth/Folklore: a midwife fairy, she induced dreams on people meanwhile they sleep, famously for being mention in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, there is still debate from where Shakespeare took the name Mab. She is also mentioned as a queen of the Unseelie Court (the wicked fae faction), a obscure version with not much further info and concordance of being the same Romeo and Juliet's Mab Characteristics: she is depicted of very small size, insect size, her look vary, from hag-witch to beauty fairy. Green knight Origin: English folklore, matter of Britain Myth/Folklore: an adversary of King Arthur and his knights of the round table, a mysterious kmight that one day came to the hall of Camelot and defy King Arthur, Sir Gawain accepted the challenge, the tale known as "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight". His true name is Bertilak de Hautdesert, lord of a big castle who was enchanted by Morgan le Fay with the purpose of being a challenge and test to Arthur's knights strenght, skills and virtue. Characteristics: His knight armor and (sometimes) his skin are of green color, he wields a battle axe, wich features one of his tests/challenges, he has strenght and combat skills, as a fairy being he features supernatural abilities, like survive being beheaded and return his head to his place, also shapeshift and illusions. Cliodnha Origin: Celtic mythology, irish mythology Myth/Folklore: a deity part of the supernatural/fae group Thuatha de Dannan, she is the queen of the Banshees, as a goddess has the functions of love, beauty and sea. Daughter of the sea god Manannán Mac Lir, her most famous myth involves a tragic romance of her and a mortal man. Characteristics: She has three colorful birds, whom sing could heal sickness. Finvarra Origin: Irish folklore, celtic mythology Myth/Folklore: King of the fairies, part of the "sidhe" (a irish word for a group of celtic mythology fairies), particullary from the west side of Ireland, associated with horses, wealth and good harvest. In certain tales he is also a ruler of the dead/world of the dead. Characteristics: althought in some tales he can take people, he is mostly benevolent, key figure to good harvest and if its honored and respected he can reward humans with riches.
